This book gave a good accounting of what it was like to be a cowboy in the rough and tumble days between the end of the Civil War and barbed-wire fences went up to close the open range and end the days of the massive cattle drives. To work as a cowboy in those early days in the Southwest, took a special kind of person with an adventurous spirit and no fear of the elements, outlaws and hostile Indians. This became very obvious with John D. Young's descriptive recollections using the cowboy vernacular. I now feel that I have a close insight into those early times, because of this engaging book. I met John D. Young's grandson in Oklahoma recently and he recommended this book to me. Interestingly, he is the spitting image of his granddad as he is pictured in the book.

J Frank Dobie is was a master folklore writer. So it is no surprise that this account of the life a a south Texas stockman is informative and well written. Having grown up in west Texas,I recognized the land and many of the people I knew. Yet, I learned a great deal I had never known and came a way with a much better understanding of the history of my home state.

This book is a classic for a reason. Terrific history, and as is with J. Frank Dobie, very well-told.

I am currently reading this book, and it is an excellent history of the late 1800's in Texas.

A must read for those interested in frontier Texas from one who experienced life in that time. Young and Dobie crafted a wonderful book..

If you really want to know about Texas, this is the book for you.

A great book of how the West really was.

I ordered "A Vaquero of the Brush Country" because of my curiosity about an event in early Texas history having to do with the cowboys of that era. This book gives me a glimpse into that time period in a first-hand way. I love that it is written in first person and the accounts are obviously accurate. I am still enjoying this read, as I have stretched the entertainment out over the past several weeks.
