Dale may be settling into his strange new life with his Tah'Narian mate Keyno after being “harvested†from Earth, but that doesn't mean his struggle with the changes is over. Without doubt, the biggest challenge of all will be fulfilling the need which caused the Tah'Narians to initiate the harvest in the first place: conceiving and bearing a child for his mate. That need provides the main backbone of the story, but there are numerous other things that happen to Dale and his adopted ‘family’ along the way.“Journey's End†picks up right where the first book, Taken leaves off, and sets a blistering pace, in more ways than one. The writing flows easily, and the way the chapters are linked together means this book very quickly, albeit somewhat infuriatingly, becomes one you simply can't put down.As in the first book, everything is related from Dale's point of view. He is quite an engaging character. At times Dale seems a bit more mature than you would expect from a young man in his early twenties, but then something will happen and he will react just the way you might expect someone of his age to act in a difficult situation. It's all handled in a way that makes Dale more realistic rather than contradictory.This book effectively wraps up The Harvest series and sets up The Harvest Young series. You will definitely want to read the first two books before delving into the follow-on books, since the main characters in The Harvest Young are conceived and born in The Harvest series.
If you haven't read Harvest: Taken you definitely need to read that book 1st. This book takes place immediately following it and continues on the journey of Dale, Keyno, and their friends as they navigate continuing to expand their circle of friends, welcoming children into their lives, and continuing to experience all the chaos that seems to follow in Dale's wake. Poor Dale can't catch a break. The double dosing has insane side effects as the book continues to reveal.The 1st book is an introduction to the characters and the world that they live in. The 2nd book is to show the joys and struggles as the continue to grow as individuals and as a group. Close friendships are high lighted in this book because I think that is what makes Dale and Keyno unique, they have a tight circle of friends that they seem to want to experience life with. But life has its bumps and so does the relationship in the book. Never fear is wraps up rather lovely and you aren't left wanting anything but the stories of the kids(which several of these books are out and you should definitely check them out). If you loved the 1st book you can't go wrong with this one. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the crazy ride that is "Damnit Dale"

And continues it does, not as a stand-alone book, but straight on as the next chapter of Dale and Keyno’s life together. But as a stand alone, it falters and ultimately fails to jell as a book.Not to be a total killjoy , I am fascinated with Ms. Church’s Tah’narian Universe. The Tah’narian’s were an inter-sexed species that suffered the loss of their reproductive abilities after devastating biological warfare. Those that survived lost their “female†reproductive ability, leaving them only with their “male†reproductive equipment intact. All of this was explained in Book One, but it you just start with Book Two, you’ll be scratching your head. Still the concept of a once dual sexed species now stripped of one half of its reproductive ability is a fascinating one, rife with potentials for world building and exploration of a culture split apart.This never happens. And it is disappointing.I am always impressed with Ms. Church’s ability to write a sex scene. Usually the scenes are hot, and very expressive. But, but, but, the first three chapters are merely interesting as Dale and Keyno thrash about in the throws of Dale’s first estrus cycle sporting his new baby-making equipment courtesy of a double-dosed Tah’narian DNA infusion. Estrus, with its physical demands on both partners, doesn’t seem fun or sexy at all, despite its logical conclusion. When Dale, concerned about Keyno’s extremely depleted stated afterward asks a friend about it, the friend replies, “Estrus is hard on the one during the servicing.â€Ugh.And the ability to write a sex scene does not automatically convert into a novel. Despite the potential of Ms. Church’s pitch, without going into spoilers, Keyno and Dale race between home and Keyno’s uncle’s palace, attending the personal crisis of various friends’ dramas surrounding the births of their friends’ children. There is one section where Dale, Keyno and their friends go camping on the planet where Keyno was kidnapped by space pirates in the first book. Is it really a spoiler then to say, “Well, what do you think happens there?†The “devastating secret†devolves into a mini-melodrama where everything is good within a day instead of honestly exploring why Keyno continues to hold back information from his mate. The return to Earth for business and a meet-up with Dale’s parents only highlights the ridiculousness of someone kidnapped for mating purposes accepting his fate without rancor or resentment. “Hey, mom, dad, meet my mate Keyno. Yeah, he was the one that had me kidnapped so I could mate with him, but it’s all good now.†Yeah. In short, while there is plenty of wailing and moaning, there are no real high stakes in the relationship of Dale and Keyno, no real jack-up of tension throughout the book, and no resolution of issues because no real issues are presented.If you want something lighthearted that doesn’t tax the brain, Harvest: Journey’s End is an okay read for a rainy afternoon.
I was so looking forward to this second book, and was anxious to read it once it came out, but I was completely disappointed. I personally felt that the author rushed into the book; the writing on the first book was very descriptive and every character had their unique personalities that set them apart and the plot was excellent, but unfortunately it is lost in this second book!Apart from the minimal grammatical errors, some characters from the previous book were out of character. Kia, a new alien character who is introduced in Journey's End went completely out of character by the conclusion of the book.I feel the author could've done more. I wanted to read more from this author, using this same plot and characters. Like maybe make a series with each couple from The Harvest, I would've loved a more detailed story about Ti and Colt's relationship and Kia's story also.
