Review

"You just gotta admire Bryan Fry’s brand of insanity, it’s begat by the same innocent attraction that some kids have to wild, ‘dangerous’ things. While having a blast doing it, Bryan levitates his venomous adventure to the realms of high science and tells a cracking good tale about it all." —Romulus Whitaker, herpetologist and wildlife conservationist“Ask Bryan Grieg Fry what he does for a living, and you’re suddenly thrown into a strange world full of venom and danger. In Venom Doc, Fry takes readers on a gripping tour of that world, showing why the dangerous creatures he spends his life with are also among the most fascinating.” —Carl Zimmer, author of Parasite Rex“Bryan Fry’s recent monograph, Venomous Reptiles and Their Toxins is a scientific tour de force. His new book, Venom Doc, is jam-packed with wildly entertaining behind-the-scenes stories of how Bryan became an expert on venom and the trials and tribulations of a life in science. Brilliant, flamboyant, and sometimes controversial, this is the story of his life, warts and all. This book is thrilling and thought-provoking! Bryan’s memoir is a must-read for anyone interested in herpetology.”—Nigel Marven, BBC Television Host“If the first two rules of writing one's memoirs are to live a remarkable life and to relate its anecdotes in an interesting, entertaining way, then Bryan Fry's "Dr. Venom" nails it on both counts. . . . Fry's life and career have been outliers among outliers, and Doctor Venom is endlessly entertaining for just that reason: It is the diary of a quintessentially mad scientist.. . . Each chapter paints a portrait of not only his bizarre profession, but also what makes Bryan . . . Bryan. Although Fry's research is complex, reading about it is easy, and the stories are populated by a cast of characters as colorful as you might expect. Fans of herp history will find Doctor Venom not only an important addition to their libraries, but a fun, engaging page-turner as well.” —Ray Morgan, The Venom Interviews“Bryan is the Hunter S. Thompson of his science—he doesn't so much study venom as indulge in its excesses to fully understand his subject from the inside. This is a cracking read that will take you through his chaotic and often scary world as he has experienced it, seen through his blood-shot eyes.” —Dr. Paul M.A Willis, Paleontologist and Science Communicator, presenter and host for Australia’s Science Channel"In Venom Doc, Bryan truly bares all with a sort of in-your-face candor and lack of filter that makes him one of the most refreshing if intimidating people I know. And while at first, he seems to glorify what may at best be categorized as reckless behavior, Bryan’s life story takes a sharp turn for the worse, and the reader sees him at his most vulnerable. . . . If you’re a fan of the animals most love to loathe, then this book is definitely for you, what with the plethora of snakes, lizards and other animals that Bryan describes working with over the years. But in a broader sense, it’s a story of one man’s grand adventures and how they almost killed him—almost, but not quite. . . . As its subtitle boasts, it really is 'The edgiest, darkest and strangest natural history memoir ever.'" —Discover Magazine"Dr. Bryan Grieg Fry is the Darwin of Venomology, a pioneering scientist of the topmost caliber. His epiphany-provoking observations about the ‘treasure trove’ of pharmaceutical potential in venoms have shown the human value of what are generally feared, misunderstood, and often loathed venom-endowed creatures. He is also one of the most brilliantly crazy people I know, and in the best possible way. This book is a great read. It is sensational and provocative . . . and pharmacologically active— just like venom and Bryan himself!” —Sean P. Bush, MD, FACEP, Professor of Emergency Medicine, with Tenure, East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine"Venom Doc is a rollercoaster ride account of the life of a professional venom biologist. This biography graphically outlines scientist and television personality Bryan Fry’s passion for anything venomous, starting with his formative years and then charting his globetrotting exploits to collect venoms from a host of dangerous creatures. Providing an insight into the mind and actions of a colourful field biologist with a dark sense of humour, Venom Doc offers a no-holds barred account of his life journey and transformation, interspersed with near-death experiences, euphoric highs and reflections on his own mortality. From bites by venomous snakes, to catching octopuses in Antarctica, to a broken back and partial paralysis, this book is fast-paced and filled with some truly bizarre and entertaining extreme real-life stories. Throughout, Bryan offers his scientific insight into the creatures he studies and the elixir he ultimately craves—venom." —Dr. Nick Casewell, Senior Lecturer at the Alistair Reid Venom Research Unit, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine“Bryan is my mentor and hero when it comes to all things venom; he seems to have lived a dozen lives, and each one at breakneck speed. His memoirs are a wild acid-soaked synthesis of Hunter S. Thompson and Gerald Durrell, and I defy anyone to read them without gulping and gasping every other page.” —Dr. Steve Backshall, BAFTA-winning English naturalist, writer, and television presenter“The stuff that tall tales are made of . . . sex, drugs, serpents and rockin’ science . . . but for some the world is a crazier place than the movies or even the fantasies of others. Venom Doc will leave many wondering if Bryan is driven by an unquenchable thirst for discovery or if he is a mad man. Possibly both are correct . . .” —Shawn K. Heflick, MS, CEO/Founder-Crocodile Conservation International, Director-Venom University“In Venom Doc, Bryan Fry brings to life his lifelong passion (or some would say obsession) for venom and through it, his quest to seek out some of the world most dangerous animals in over 40 countries. From chilling tales of dangerous encounters with taipans, king cobras, and arctic vipers, to komodo dragons, vampire bats, and even an Antarctic giant octopus, Fry never ceases to entertain, but also educate, the reader. This book documents, in a very down to earth and candid style, his life journey, aspirations and achievements in his continual quest to challenge himself and contribute to society, while at the same time explaining many technical and fascinating concepts in easy to understand terms to the lay reader. More than simply just a biography, this colorful and gripping account of the action-filled life of one of Australia's most renowned biologists is littered with fascinating insights and facts. If only there were more writers like Fry out there, bringing scientific research to life—translating an often inaccessible, dry, and technical field into an exciting, entertaining, and educational read.” —Roger Chao, head of the Explorers Club, Australian/New Zealand Chapter

Bryan Grieg Fry is proving himself to be one of the craziest guys alive on this planet today, although he dances with death every day he is able to pull himself from the jaws of danger to dance again, he acts as if his Russian father inlaws machine gun toting body guards can protect him from danger anywhere in the world.. He really knows how to play dangerously and write about it as well, he should be hero of many boys to the dread of their parents. Besides his crazier side he is a top notch scientist, showing the world that you do not have to be a lab coat bespecktacled quiet person to do good research. Raymond Ditmars excited the snakeboys of the 1950s-1970s, Bryan takes the new age males to anothe level,.! An excellent read, only thing lacking were more photos of his beautiful wife!

Interesting encounters with venomous animals, especially snakes. The book takes you thru many bites and discoveries, which was very exciting. I also learned about Komodo dragons and their poison glands which was very enlightening. I heard that they had dangerous bacteria in their bite and he showed how they were venomous. Last chapter about his wife was unneeded, but maybe she forced him to write it. A little too enchanted with academics.

Bryan Fry is passionate about herps, an insane adrenaline junkie, and has a way with words that leaves me openmouthed at times and laughing til I cry other times. I adore this, and am going to recommend it all over the place.

Learned quite a bit about poison and anti-venin I did not know, like how snake specie it is - not all rattlesnakes are the same! A friend of the Alligator Hunter Steve Irwin who has traveled the world collecting poisonous later testing and development of anti-venom.

Reads like a modernized Bill Haast biography, but more science and more present day madness from one of the great reptile researchers!

Smart well written and easy to read. This is a scientist, who speaks our language, and is not afraid to get dirty chasing reptiles like the rest of us

Amazing individual

I love snakes and all reptiles, but even if you don't I still recommend this book. Dr. Fry is not only a brilliant scientist, he is brilliantly funny. The title pretty much nails it. I loved this book. A sequel would be good.

As inventor, futurist, and noted author of several books on technology, Kurzweil has often pushed the boundaries of convention and stirred controversy with his visionary ideas. Guaranteed to trigger still more debate, his latest work expands on a theme first introduced in his best-seller, The Age of Intelligent Machines (1989); namely, a proposed project to reverse-engineer the human mind and use that information to build superintelligent computers to solve the world’s thorniest problems. Arguing against the prevailing notion that the brain is simply too complex to be replicated in machine form, either in hardware or software, Kurzweil points out how recent, groundbreaking scientific advances, from mapping the human genome to 3D molecular imaging, have resulted in exponential technological growth. On his way to demonstrating the inevitability of computer intelligence that outstrips its human creators, Kurzweil dissects such topics as the nature of consciousness and transcendent abilities like love and creativity, and seeks to rebut his potential critics. While his prose sometimes founders when analyzing abstract data, Kurzweil’s extrapolation of technology’s breathtaking potential remains provocative and inspiring. --Carl Hays

Kurzweil's vision of our super-enhanced future is completely sane and calmly reasoned, and his book should nicely smooth the path for the earth's robot overlords, who, it turns out, will be us.~The New York Times "Kurzweil writes boldly and with a showman’s flair, expertly guiding the lay reader into deep thickets of neuroscience."~Kate Tuttle, Boston Globe This book is a breath of fresh air.... Kurzweil makes an argument for optimism.~Laura Spinney, New Scientist "A fascinating exercise in futurology."~Kirkus Reviews "It is rare to find a book that offers unique and inspiring content on every page. How to Create a Mind achieves that and more. Ray has a way of tackling seemingly overwhelming challenges with an army of reason, in the end convincing the reader that it is within our reach to create nonbiological intelligence that will soar past our own. This is a visionary work that is also accessible and entertaining.~Rafael Reif, president, MIT "Kurzweil's new book on the mind is magnificent, timely, and solidly argued! His best so far!"~Marvin Minsky, MIT Toshiba Professor of Media Arts and Sciences; cofounder of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab; widely regarded as "the father of artificial intelligence" "If you ever wondered about how your mind works, read this book. Kurzweil's insights reveal key secrets underlying human thought and our ability to recreate it. This is an eloquent and thought-provoking work."~Dean Kamen, physicist; inventor of the first wearable insulin pump, the HomeChoice dialysis machine, and the IBOT mobility system; founder of FIRST; recipient of the National Medal of Technology "One of the eminent AI pioneers, Ray Kurzweil, has created a new book to explain the true nature of intelligence, both biological and nonbiological. The book describes the human brain as a machine that can understand hierarchical concepts ranging from the form of a chair to the nature of humor. His important insights emphasize the key role of learning both in the brain and in AI. He provides a credible road map for achieving the goal of super-human intelligence, which will be necessary to solve the grand challenges of humanity.~Raj Reddy, founding director, Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University; recipient of the Turing Award from the Association for Computing Machinery "Ray Kurzweil pioneered artificial intelligence systems that could read print in any type style, synthesize speech and music, and understand speech. These were the forerunners of the present revolution in machine learning that is creating intelligent computers that can beat humans in chess, win on Jeopardy!, and drive cars. His new book is a clear and compelling overview of the progress, especially in learning, that is enabling this revolution in the technologies of intelligence. It also offers important insights into a future in which we will begin solving what I believe is the greatest problem in science and technology today: the problem of how the brain works and of how it generates intelligence."~Tomaso Poggio, Eugene McDermott Professor, MIT Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences; director, MIT Center for Biological and Computational Learning; former chair, MIT McGovern Institute for Brain Research; one of the most cited neuroscientists in the world"This book is a Rosetta stone for the mystery of human thought. How to Create a Mind: The Secret of Human Thought Revealed by Ray Kurzweil"How to Create a Mind" is a very interesting book that presents the pattern recognition theory of mind (PRTM), which describes the basic algorithm of the neocortex (the region of the brain responsible for perception, memory, and critical thinking). It is the author's contention that the brain can be reverse engineered due to the power of its simplicity and such knowledge would allow us to create true artificial intelligence. The one and only, futurist, prize-winning scientist and author Ray Kurzweil takes the reader on a journey of the brain and the future of artificial intelligence. This enlightening 352-page book is composed of the following eleven chapters: 1. Thought Experiments on the World, 2. Thought Experiments on Thinking, 3. A Model of the Neocortex: The Pattern Recognition Theory of Mind, 4. The Biological Neocortex, 5. The Old Brain, 6. Transcendent Abilities, 7. The Biologically Inspired Digital Neocortex, 8. The Mind as Computer, 9. Thought Experiments on the Mind, 10. The Law of Accelerating Returns Applied to the Brain, and 11. Objections.Positives:1. Well researched and well-written book. The author's uncanny ability to make very difficult subjects accessible to the masses.2. A great topic in the "mind" of a great thinker.3. Great use of charts and diagrams.4. A wonderful job of describing how thinking works.5. Thought-provoking questions and answers based on a combination of sound science and educated speculation.6. The art of recreating brain processes in machines. "There is more parallel between brains and computers than may be apparent." Great stuff!7. Great information on how memories truly work.8. Hierarchies of units of functionality in natural systems.9. How the neocortex must work. The Pattern Recognition Theory of Mind (PRTM). The main thesis of this book. The importance of redundancy. Plenty of details.10. Evolution...it does a brain good. Legos will never be the same for me again.11. The neocortex as a great metaphor machine. Projects underway to simulate the human brain such as Markram's Blue Brain Project.12. Speech recognition and Markov models. Author provides a lot of excellent examples.13. The four key concepts of the universality and feasibility of computation and its applicability to our thinking.14. A fascinating look at split-brain patients. The "society of mind." The concept of free will, "We are apparently very eager to explain and rationalize our actions, even when we didn't actually make the decisions that led to them." Profound with many implications indeed.15. The issue of identity.16. The brain's ability to predict the future. The author's own predictive track record referenced.17. The laws of accelerating returns (LOAR), where it applies and why we should train ourselves to think exponentially.18. The author provides and analyzes objections to his thesis. In defense of his ideas. Going after Allen's "scientist's pessimism."19. The evolution of our knowledge.20. Great notes and links beautifully.Negatives:1. The book is uneven. That is, some chapters cover certain topics with depth while others suffer from lack of depth. Some of it is understandable as it relates to the limitations of what we currently know but I feel that the book could have been reformatted into smaller chapters or subchapters. The book bogs down a little in the middle sections of the book.2. Technically I disagree with the notion that evolution always leads to more complexity. Yes on survival but not necessarily on complexity.3. The author has a tendency to cross-market his products a tad much. It may come across as look at me...4. A bit repetitive.5. Sometimes leaves you with more questions than answers but that may not be a bad thing...6. No formal separate bibliography. In summary, overall I enjoyed this book. Regardless of your overall stance on the feasibility of artificial intelligence no one brings it like Ray Kurzweil. His enthusiasm and dedication is admirable. The author provides his basic thesis of how the brain works and a path to achieve true artificial intelligence and all that it implies. Fascinating in parts, bogs down in other sections but ultimately satisfying. I highly recommend it!Further suggestions: "Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior" by Leonard Mlodinow, "The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies---How We Construct Beliefs and Reinforce Them as Truths" by Michael Shermer, "The Scientific American Brave New Brain: How Neuroscience, Brain-Machine Interfaces, Neuroimaging, Psychopharmacology, Epigenetics, the Internet, and ... and Enhancing the Future of Mental Power" by Judith Horstman, "The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature" by Steven Pinker, "Who's in Charge?: Free Will and the Science of the Brain" and "Human: The Science Behind What Makes Us Unique", by Michael S. Gazzaniga, "Hardwired Behavior: What Neuroscience Reveals about Morality 1st Edition by Tancredi, Laurence published by Cambridge University Press Paperback" by Laurence Tancredi, "Braintrust: What Neuroscience Tells Us about Morality" by Patricia S. Churchland, "The Myth of Free Will" by Cris Evatt, "SuperSense" by Bruce M. Hood and "The Brain and the Meaning of Life" by Paul Thagard.

The first half of Kurzweil's book summarizes what is known about information processing by the human brain. He details how the neocortex recognizes patterns and stores information hierarchically, producing memory, consciousness and identity. He relates this to modern digital computers in terms of process and speed. After a brief look at hidden Markov chains, he arrives at his favorite topic, LOAR, the law of accelerating returns which leads him to sharing his thoughts about singularities. The victory by WATSON on the TV quiz show, 'Jeopardy', appears frequently in this story.Kurzweil's successful experience with natural language processing software gives him considerable credibility and authority in this attempt to predict computer breakthroughs during the coming decades. Ray Kurzweil is one of the foremost AI geniuses of our times and you probably should read one of his books.

A fascinating idea mired in a circuitous narrative. Kinda like having to sort through a hundred boxes of cereal for a single prize that you have to put together yourself. Perfectly fine for people with time on their hands and a fireplace to sit next to on a wintry evening. But I found myself highly impatient as I leafed through page after page looking for his point. I will always buy Ray's books. Make no mistake. He just needs an editor who knows how to sift the chaff. And Ray, if you are reading this, do let the editor do his/her job. Don't get precious about concepts. We're all pretty smart around here. Just make a point and move on.

Very disappointed. The book is about how the mind works, and not AT ALL about "how to create a mind". So if you're into the study of the brain, by all means read this book. But I was expecting something very different given the author's work in AI and given the title of the book, which is misleading.

In this boom Ray puts together how his knowledge of how the brain works helped in developing his technology a lot of us use daily. He deep dives into research done, as well as the why's of how things work. It is interesting to see the predictions he has made and his reason as to why they came true. He is a very smart man and the book for me was a good read. Although at some points I didn't fully understand what was being explained the majority of the book was so interesting it was hard for me to put down.

Wonderful read, very clear. Kurzweil has achieved confidence and articulation since earlier books, which were fantastic but a bit scattered and self-exploring. This was solid thought-provocation right in the kisser, especially his "everything is hierarchical patterns" grand unification theory. This stuff will change ya!Some find his work overly optimistic / simplistic, thinking that reduces his credibility. Nay, the guy has very real acumen - OCR, Dragon Speak, now Google. His is applied science, implementing his hypotheses directly - the proof is in the pudding. Other criticisms are that this book doesn't illuminate AI implementation ("the title makes grand claims"). Well for that you'll need a text book friends, paperback won't cut it. This book is "Start here. History, core theories, inspiration, grand unification". If you're inspired, make "Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach" your next read.

This was a really mind-blowing book. I'm always so impressed by Ray's ability to talk about such obscure things with such clarity and insight. His ability to time things is somewhat miraculous considering the array of potential outcomes and probabilities. This book was one of his best.

The precepts that developed the great voices of the Golden Age of Song are made available in this edition to all vocal students and afficionados of today.

An interesting read, but like many things a voice teacher may say, but much of it is of little value to apply without understanding the teacher's whole approach and without audible singing examples and real-time feedback, which is of course why studio training is needed. A book on singing isn't very helpful without going into serious detail about what is meant.

This slim collection of the teaching of one of the greatest vocal pedagogues in history is packed full of sound technical and philosophical advice about singing, music-making, and living a life of fulfillment. The poetry, density, and symbolism of Lamperti's guidance encourages the reader to absorb it in tiny increments - a page or a paragraph at a time - and then meditate on the passage to get the full benefit. Lamperti's training provided the foundation of many of the greatest operatic careers of the late 19th and 20th centuries, and his pupil's pupil's pupils are now using his method as laid out in "Vocal Wisdom" to train the great singers of the 21st century.

Every singer of classical technique should have this book. And buy one for your friends! The little gems are so true, so accurate and will help singers of all levels. It's also a very easy read. You can just read one "wisdom" a day and absorb it, or soak up a bunch. Each idea is short and simple.

The title is right since this Master did knew the true Principles of classic singing, which are rooted in the old italian school. Nevertheless, is not a simple manual for beginners because his maxims are so compact that need an important background of specific knoeledge to be thoroughly undestood! From my personal point of view, as professional singer and teacher it sumarizes briefly a lot of wise advises which I'm tanking in good account, and of course, lately quoted in the book I'm actually writing on this beloved subjet. G. B. Lamperti deserves to be studied even in our days and under the light of modern scientific advences in this controversial matter.

The title is very fitting as this little gem contains many a wise pearls. A must buy for vocalists and the musically inclined.

Delightful. Highly recommended.

In depth detailed correct use/coaching of the voice

I am reading this as one of the textbooks for my Vocal Pedagogy course at the USF School of Music. Let me tell you, this is a book that every single vocalist who is truly serious about their career MUST read at least three times through. It's a wonderful selection of some of the most powerful pedagogical statements. I think I have learned more from this small volume than I have in all of my voice lessons combined. Not to say that I haven't learned a lot, of course, but this affirms and debunks all of the myths and absolute, well, maxims, of proper vocal technique. Bravissimo, Lamperti!

I wish I would have had this book 40 years ago as I began my journey in leading within the local church. I am not sure it would have changed many of my experiences, but I would have had a map to better understand where I was, what I need to do to keep moving and ultimately where I was headed. This book succinctly and (I believe) accurately describes God's heart and intent for leaders functioning in His Church. We must continue to encourage apostolic leaders of sodalic organizations to respond to their call and use their gifts through sodalic structures. The Church can no longer be seen as just a local body of believers (Modality); the Church must also be seen as comprised of catalytic movements lead by apostolic leaders (Sodalities). As Sam so well points out, these two type of organizations, like two legs of a pair of pants are necessary for the health and vibrancy of the Church. Don't just read it, but live it, for the Kingdom of God depends on these truths.

This book gave me a lot to think about regarding how to define the Church and how to view apostolic gifting and ministry. Some books take a lot of effort to read; others draw me in. This one drew me in.

I have enjoyed reading through this book. It brought new insights to Ralph Winter's concepts of "sodality" and "modality." The book shows how both dimensions of the Church are essential dimensions of the whole Church.

Great book.Reframes traditional conversation around the role of apostles, prophets, and evangelists. Very insightful.

Loved it. Very well written and challenging in a good way. A must read.

An important read on the role of apostolic leaders in the modern Church! Pastors, this is essential reading for everyone on your team!

Sam Metcalfe writes from his heart and from his experience leading an apostolic ministry. His words need to be taken seriously by churches and missions committed to global movements.

This book is an essential read for those launching the next generation of apostolic leaders. Whether you're a pastor, missionary, or simply a young leader considering how best to serve God's Kingdom, Beyond the Local Church will open your eyes to a biblically-based missiology rooted in the history of the Church, but often overlooked in the traditional church structures of our Western world. This "two-footed" paradigm of a global Church composed of both local churches and apostolic entities frees leaders to focus on the ministry vision that is best suited to their calling, strengths and gifting. But more than that, it also opens the door for the Church to unleash new movements of the Gospel that, frankly, don't fit well within the existing walls of the local church.

This is a logical next step for the prolific Michael Gurian, as he continues his exploration and illumination of gender, life stages, brain science and how individuals transition to the next chapter of their life stories. In his latest offering, Gurian takes on one of the taboos of modern American culture, and he does so respectfully, thoughtfully and with evidence-based conclusions about something all of us--if we are fortunate--will experience. Not everything he says will resonate with each individual reader, but Gurian suggests ways to be, ways to act, ways to connect and ways to deal with the small ignominies of aging and the opportunities they can be turned into with the proper attitude and approach. Gurian shares his own aging process with us and calls us to be aware of the importance of decisions we make about our responses. He relies on his earlier explorations of gender differences to help men and women understand why they might react differently to becoming older, as he focuses on the importance of beauty and joy: a real service to those who have been enculturated to anticipate and experience aging as simply an ordeal and a series of losses. He provides information that empowers and encourages taking control of our lives even as our bodies make it inevitable that we must let go. This book will not make the slings and arrows of aging easier to bear, but it will let readers appreciate the ways in which aging can be a rich and beautiful journey through a quintessential human drama. In this book elders are encouraged to take on a role that may be new for them but that has always been a part of human culture and that must exist if we are to transition appropriately. He asks us to consider new communities that we can form to make the passage from one stage to another not only bearable but wonderful. The book contains practical questions to ask ourselves, helpful stage-delineation to assist us in understanding what is happening to us, and supportive tips on how to prepare and to go through the three stages Gurian explores: transformation, distinction and completion. He does not shrink from addressing all aspects of aging: from physical loss to intimacy, and from isolation to the fear of death. He encourages us to recognize and to avoid the real killers: stress, clutter and guilt, and to make the most of our relationships with our children, our grandchildren and our age peers. The focus in this book js on the positive, joyful, life-bringing experiences we can concentrate on and embrace rather than on worrying about how our bodies are failing us. This is an easy read that challenges us, nevertheless, to examine our assumptions, and encourages us to welcome what we cannot avoid. We can turn the inevitable into opportunity to live an enriched, empowered and beautiful last stage of our lives. The inclusion of "Eva's Song" and "Kathy's Song" provides a bonus of lyrical empathy with all those who have gone before us and who have lit the way to the kind of aging experience that we may all wish for.

This book sat on my Kindle for 2 years before I read it. It was highly recommended by a relative who also left a glowing review. But I prefer reading fiction so I put it off thinking it would be dry and boring. Well, it is NOT dry and boring. It is so interesting and informative that after reading a couple of chapters, I actually bought the hardback version--used, excellent condition--so that I could earmark and highlight it and paraphrase information for the senior community we are creating here. I thought I knew almost everything about aging but surprise! I didn't. I love the stages of aging after 50, My life up to now 72 fits the descriptions of the first two stages and I have a third to look forward to! Thank you, Michael Gurian!

I am in my mid-fifties and can definitely feel the effects of aging. I just turned fifty-five and are more aware than ever about my life-clock ticking...there is only so much time left. Where to from here? So Michael Gurian's book arrived at a perfect time for me, personally and professionally. I value Michael's style - he blends scientific, spiritual and psychological knowledge from today with age-old wisdom in The Wonder of Aging. It's practical, insightful, whimsical...and a good read.Professionally, as a Controller of a complex business, I see the issues and questions of aging every day. The workforce is changing, and the idea of being a trusted, visible elder is changing too. In The Wonder of Aging, Gurian helps us look at a lot of these issues with a new lens, and gives someone like me practical tips that are useful not only at home and in life but also among managers and supervisors at work. The multi-generational workplace needs this kind of insight if we are all to thrive, especially today with baby-boomers working into their late sixties and early seventies. If you want insights into the aging process, either for yourself, your parents, or your grandparents, this is the book to buy.

This book is a MUST read for everyone who is 45 & over ! Be ready for embracing life. Some people are acting old at 40...and others are 80 and still going strong. Get this book and read it. Be ready for life, see where you fit in and why and what you can do about aging easily and being ready for the last quarter of your life and enjoying it! I bought the e-book for my Ipad to read and was blown away by how good it is for everyone to have. I have ordered the hardbound book to use in my workshops and trainings and working with clients. It is a MUST Read and a MUST have book! Well written and easy to understand and relate to!

More interesting, and spiritual, than I expected. You will clearly see your friends and yourself in the aging process. Different issues for different "stages"- very engaging and useful book.

One of the values of "The Wonder of Aging" is that it speaks directly to the psycho/emotional gap in most Americans between fearing and accepting aging. From infancy on, we are bombarded with life-extension while this study focuses on life-enrichment. As is true of all Michael Gurian's work, each chapter combines ideas with actual situations. The result is a thoroughly readable guide to a part of the life cycle that American culture has had a hard time thinking deeply about.Jay Gurian, author of "The Dependency Tendency: Returning to Each Other in Modern America. The Wonder of Aging: A New Approach to Embracing Life After Fifty"The Wonder of Aging: A New Approach to Embracing Life After Fifty

I loved "In the Garden of Beasts" and really liked "Devil in the White City" and "Isaac's Storm," but this one a dud. Or, to be more specific, half a dud. Larson links two stories - Marconi's marketing of his wireless technology and a murder that apparently grabbed the headlines worldwide in the early 20th century - but the only thing they have in common is one incident. The rest of the book tells two totally different stories, and while both convey a sense of the times, they are not otherwise related and really don't complement each other. The story of Dr. Crippen's murder of his wife Belle (among other names) is more standard Larson - it's fascinating at all times and gripping at others. Marconi's story is also interesting, but not as much, and by constantly jumping from one to the other he undercuts the drama of both. The last 100 pages or so, when the two stories converge, is the best part of the book and more or less worth waiting for, but getting there is not half the fun and is downright tedious at times.I'd pass on this one. If you haven't read "In the Garden of Beasts," do so now, and then think about his other books. But don't waste your money or time on this one.

What a fantastic book! I've been struck down by the flu and had to spend several days in bed. This book was my companion. As miserable as I feel, this book made me forget about my symptoms. I was enthralled by the story and had to constantly remind myself this was non-fiction. A lot of the negative reviews this book has received claim that Mr.Larsen went into too much detail about Marconi and his experiments. I beg to differ. I have no knowledge of the intricacies of electricity or how waves travel but found the information easy to understand and relevant to the story. I also think the book was well organized. The transfer between the stories of Marconi and Crippen are done well. I was interested in both stories, not just the gruesome details of the murder, which does not present itself until late in the book. This is a book that is both engaging and informative. Highly recommended.

This is the third book of Erik Larson that I have read. All of his books, including this one, are highly researched and easy to read. If you can only choose one of his books to read, I would say by far, his book "Devil in the White City" is his best.Thunderstruck, uses the same format as the "Devil in the White City", where he interweaves two stories together. One story is about Marconi, who invented the wireless. The other story is about Dr. Crippen, who murdered his wife. The two stories are connected because Marconi's wireless is used to capture Dr. Crippen as he tried to escape to America.First let me talk about the Marconi part of the book. As stated above, Erik Larson does an amazing job researching this book. He has a "Notes and Sources" section at the end of the book, where he shows his sources. For the first half of the book, I was riveted to the Marconi story. Mr. Larson does a great job explaining how Marconi created the wireless, how he tried to improve on the wireless, and how other people also claimed credit for creating the wireless before Marconi. This story at times drags though in the second half of the book. Mr Larson tries to write about all of his research, an at times it felt that what he was saying was not advancing the story. It felt repetitive at times, even though the event happened at three different locations.Just an FYI, Mr. Larson sometimes goes on historical tangents. Usually I found these tangents extremely entertaining and informative. But I can see some readers finding them unnecessary for the story. But please note, I am extremely happy he put them into the book. The other part of the book is about Dr. Crippen. For the first half of the book I found this part of the story somewhat boring. Once Dr. Crippen meets Ethel, the story become really interesting. If you are looking to read about a sick and devious murderer, this is not the book for you. Dr. Crippen and Ethel seem like really nice people, while his wife is not that likeable. One thing the reader needs to take account is this murder actually happen, and it occurred in the early 1900's. No matter how well Mr. Larson investigated this story, he couldn't find all of the answers. He can't go into the mind of Dr. Crippen, he can only state the facts as he know them. Thus some aspects of the murder, Mr. Larson can't explain. He will give different theories, but he can't say for sure how the murder went down. Also, some actions of Dr. Crippen really confused me as a reader. Here is an example of the one that bothers me the most. His wife always was threatening to leave him, and telling him that other men would wan't her in a minute. She even takes steps in terms of leaving him. Why did Dr. Crippen not just leave his wife. instead of murdering her? Mr. Larson as an historical writer can't answer that question, but it is a question that really bothers me.The reason I gave this book 4 stars is that the story about Dr. Crippen is boring for the 1st half of the book. And sometimes the author goes overboard about Marconi. A good editor should have seen this problem and fixed it. Thus I recommend this book, with those small caveats.

Entertaining beyond all reason, Erik Larson tells parallel tales of obsession, genius, myopia, accomplishment (and its sacrifices). The book serves as the definitive, astonishingly compelling, detailed and surprising life of Guglielmo Marconi, ultimately (at last?) credited as the inventor of wireless communication, an invention that would profoundly change the world. His inspiration, desperation, obsession, his perhaps unprecedented self-belief, as well as his deep-seeded terror of competitors, drove him relentlessly on. Not a scientist. Self-educated. He, and his "wireless" was quite beyond his life's work. It was his life. Of equal appeal is the unraveling of one of the most compelling murders in British history, of which I will say little. Just make SURE you read through the last page! This is indeed an historical account - an almost maniacally researched one - that reads like a novel, a thriller, a procedural. It is exceedingly entertaining. As well as a profound achievement of his own. Larson' prose is crystal clear, filled with amusement, and amusing details, and he creates characters of many dimensions, impulses, quirks, and oddities. A great read.

Erik Larsen is an admirable researcher and tension builder as he was in the boffo 'Devil in the White City'. I loved learning about Marconi, a fascinatingly complex individual and the amazing Dr. Crippen. The tale bogged down in the middle but it sure caught fire when Belle disappeared. Another amazing chapter in history masterfully told.Note on Larson's research: He doesn't just provide a fact, he shows his relentless research in things like the cat used in the forensics study of Belle. He not only knew the cat's name but that it survived and was adopted by a medical assistant, had a littler of kittens and was done in by a dog. He doesn't do research by halves.

This textbook is relevant to anyone working in the construction industry that deals with contracts and plans/specifications.Everyone from the owner, the engineer, to the contractor can take something away from this text. I used this book as part of a graduate course in construction engineering. This text is very accessible to anyone with experience in engineering and construction. It covers contract aspects of engineering and construction. If I had stumbled upon this book outside of my course, I would have happily read this from front to back. I found myself reading ahead of the syllabus out of pure interest in the subject.I highly recommend this to anyone that has any interest in contracts and construction.

I'ts my opinion that this book is really interesting and useful.Actually I'm finishing the master degree on industrial engineering and I would underline the importance of considering the different perspectives affecting the deployment of industrial projects. The topic treated refers to the legal aspects of contracting in the field of construction. The strength of the present book is the structure and the clearance in explaining the legal aspects of the construction industry. The main weakness is that only considers the American Market.

Wish there was a study guide. Had this text for construction class.

Great foundation for understanding construction contracts and law. Good for beginners, maybe not for more veteran contractors. Gives good insight and plenty of examples.

It didn't come with the CD!

class is done

I am taking a summer course and this is my textbook for the course. Since I ordered after class was started, I was desperately looking for the delivery. I received it exactly in one week with standard delivery. The condition of the book is also amazing. It was marked as "used" but I don't think it was used. It is like new. Thank you!!

I got all of my rentals at the midpoint of my expected arrival date. Thank you very much.I am not sure if I like the books because I have not completed the classes. But I would definitely rent from this place again.
