When Matthew Prescott was 12, his older sister came home from school one day and announced that she had decided to become a "vegetarian," whatever that was.In the grand tradition of little brothers everywhere, Matthew made sure to stick his forkful of beef under nose at the dinner table while making mooing sounds. But he also tried her bean burritos, veggie burgers, and other plant-based alternatives to meat, and found that they were actually pretty good. And when he looked at her reasons for ditching meat, he had to admit that they made a lot of sense. From that humble beginning, Matthew has become one of the most influential voices in the animal welfare, plant-forward movement. He's Senior Food Policy Director for the Humane Society of the United States, and advisor to the Good Food Institute. He's both contributed to and harnessed the stunning change in public perception and habits around reducing animal consumption by helping giant food companies alter and improve their supply chains. And now he's pulled off an unlikely achievement: he's produced a beautiful, inspiring coffee table book about environmental degradation. A call for less meat featuring quotes by Emeril Lagasse and Wolfgang Puck. A meticulously referenced, wonky policy statement that's also a gorgeous cookbook. The book, Food is the Solution, is a compendium of voices. Matthew includes essays by leaders of the world's major environmental groups, including the Sierra Club, the National Resources Defense Council, the Environmental Working Group, and Greenpeace. There's a story contributed by (non-plant-based) actor Jesse Eisenberg. A foreword by James Cameron. Quotes by Pope Francis, Bill Gates, Barack Obama, Jamie Oliver, and Martha Stewart. And yet, this book isn't about them. It's not about the powerful or the wealthy or the influential. The real protagonists of Food is the Solution are the vulnerable and the voiceless.People like Lisa and Joe Inzerillo, whose home and neighborhood in Maryland's Delmarva Peninsula have been rendered uninhabitable by dozens of industrial poultry complexes.Like the thousands of North Carolinians whose health has been harmed by the millions of gallons of liquid hog waste dumped into their drinking water sources.Like the workers in poultry processing plants, many of whom are undocumented, who spend their days in Dantean misery and have the highest turnover rates of any occupation.Like the impoverished peasants forced by economic necessity to clear cut their Amazon rainforest in order for wealthy multinationals to graze cattle. And like those cattle, and pigs, and chickens, spending unimaginably miserable lives treated as machines in the factories that feed our harmful addictions. And like the earth itself, source of all life, groaning and shuddering under the weight of all the indignities and injuries we her rude and ungrateful children have visited upon her. These are the voices that are centered and amplified by those like Matthew who do have voice and standing and influence in our society.Matthew says that the book was written for omnivores, to encourage and guide them to begin shifting their plates from animals to plants. He argues convincingly that, even in the face of these huge problems - water and air pollution, soil degradation, and global climate destabilization - we each have more power than we think if we vote with our pocketbooks, our forks, and our mouths. The recipes are gorgeous. Not whole food plant-based, but perfect transitional fare for omnivores who need to be gentled into the movement. If you'd like to know more about Matthew, and the book, you can check out my interview with him: http://plantyourself.com/260. You'll find him to be a gentle gem of a human being, a passionate advocate for a better world for all, and a kick-ass cookbook author.

As an omnivore, I hugely appreciate the attention to flavor, color, and texture of these recipes. Good news! You can eat well and do good at the same time. Fresh, colorful veggies are central to many dishes, with a supporting cast of herbs, spices, citrus, and grains to make them pop. Cashew milk, rice paper bacon, and peanut butter cups are all things you can make at home (who knew?!). Nutritional yeast reveals its transformative powers! Old favorites are brought back to life in tasty new forms--sloppy joes, pierogis, mac and cheese, pop tarts, burgers, crab cakes, buffalo wings, and pumpkin pie. Oh, and the book itself is stunning. This is a vegan cookbook that will surprise and delight everyone. Even the omnivores!

It's a fun read with beautiful visuals and done in a way that's perfect for anyone. Whether someone is just starting to look to eat better for the world and themselves, or someone who's been eating that way for years, it's a solid fit for all. I highly recommend it!

I've been waiting for this book to come out ever since I discovered it (pre-release) on the Good Food Institute website. It's a beautiful book, inside and out. The argument is solid - a plant based diet is kinder to our planet. The recipes are imaginative and varied, proving that a plant based diet can be delicious and interesting (I am so excited by the Oyster Mushroom a la Mariniere!) My boyfriend does not follow a vegan diet, but he is inching closer. This book may well push him across the line. Thanks!

Matt’s book stands apart from all their modern vegan / health / environment books that have been published in the past decade. I’ve become jaded, and skip right to the recipe section. He’s a brilliant writer, and kept my attention throughout the entire book. Within the chapters there are fantastic blurbs from celebrities and political figures relating to veganism, but it didn’t feel like fluff. The recipes themselves are exciting, with easy to follow directions and beautiful photos. This book is a must add to your cookbook collection.

Changing habits can be hard especially when it comes to what we eat and why. Without using a hammer, Matt Prescott educates while answering the question, "what's for dinner?". Beautifully written and photographed, Prescott's cookbook truly gives us "food for thought". Delicious!

I knew that we Americans eat too much meat and have horrendous factory farming of animals, but I had no idea that food production worldwide—meat, poultry, eggs, milk products, and seafood—has such a destructive effect on the entire planet. This is an eye-opening look at what each of us can do in even small ways to make a big difference to this home of ours. After all, as someone said recently, “There is no ‘planet B’.”

Much more than a great cookbook with easy to follow yet delicious recipes for all lifestyles, Matt’s book informs and educates us on the connection between what we eat and how we can positively impact the world we live in. The narrative is compelling, the photos beautiful and the recipes delicious!
