This book provides a great, short history of college basketball players that forces you down memory lane if you are a college basketball fan. Many contemporary writers struggle with rating players from previous generations. But while there was some weighting to players of the last 20 years, Mike did a good job of including many very old players, some of whom I was not familiar with.This is a great coffee table book positioned where you view games on TV. You'll be surprised how many people will pick up the book and then start debating the rankings. It's a great book to start conversations.DISCLOSURE: Mike is a friend of mine who I met when he lived in Memphis in the mid 90s. I have followed his career to The Sporting News and enjoy his articles as well as friendly banter on his opinions of college basketball. She acknowledges the existance of the internet being a place where people are able to forge "cyber-identities"...or get more comfortable being who they are. She also outlines something that is perhaps one of the most secure things about the internet in this day and age-that on the internet, you are anonymous. Therefore, you can do what you wish (good or bad) and you can interact with others via MUDs or the like...or you can decide exactly how people will think of you as.The internet is a secure medium for an insecure person. It is where many people who feel unaccepted in life go as refuge, to seek friends and partners who are like them, and who understand. It is disturbing, almost, to find that there are so many people who interact with the internet, and so many different things that they do. The globalization that comes along with the net provokes you to start rethinking many things, and questioning many others....The internet, as portrayed in this book, also helps the reader to truly examine themselves as a whole.

The author presents in her book many thoughtful and provocating ways computers are being used. Starting out with computer games as places for teenagers to hide out to scientists trying to create artificial life to children "morphing" through a series of virtual personae. On the Internet, confrontations with technology collides with ones sense of human identity. Ms.Turkle takes the reader into the text-based games where over ten thousand players can create a character or several characters specifying genders or any other physical and psychological attributes. This book presents stories of how artificial intelligence (AI) is being re-visited. Models are being designed to attempt to simulate brain processes. Furthermore, she presents her idea that AI is borrowed freely from the languages of biology and parenting, with examples such as the high school English teacher and basketball coach who tried using small connected programs to help him figure out what team to field. But readers may also find interesting is her discussion on the multi-users-domains (MUDs). The information the author has gathered from her research is very informative and yet somewhat disturbing. She presents insight on how and why individuals seek to take on new or different personas on line. Her findings point out the problems people face in life and then escape to the Internet as a release. One of the passages from her book readers might find to be very provocative. She says "Women and men tell me that the rooms and mazes on MUDs are safer than city streets, virtual sex is safer than sex anywhere, MUD friendships are more intense than real ones, and when things don't work out you can always leave! After reading her book, a reader should have a better understanding on why so many take to the MUDs in order to escape the pressures and the problems that the real world presents. One can only assume that these individuals would rather indulge in these activities than solve their problems. In summary, Ms Turkle has described "the computer as a tool, as a mirror and as a gateway to a world through a looking glass of a screen. In each of these domains we are experiencing a complex interweaving of modern and postmodern, calculation and simulation".

Sherry Turkle has written an engaging and thought-provoking book about how computers and the Internet have altered our lives. Moving beyond the concept that computers are just a tool, Turkle explains to the reader how technology allows us to explore and even alter our sense of "self." The ability to interact with other netizens in a variety of virtual settings, while adopting new personalities, has given many the freedom to explore aspects of their self-identity that without the anonymity of the electronic world would be impossible. Simulation is another area that Turkle offers interesting insights into how people perceive the world around them as a result of being able to model various possibilities via a computer simulation. These simulations and other children's toys are creating a generation who are asking the question "Is it alive?" of objects that most view as nothing more than tools or toys. Overall, I found Life on the Screen to be well written and extremely thought provoking. While you may disagree with her conclusions about technology and its affect on our concept of self, one of the key aspects of this book is that it makes you think about how your life has been altered not only physically by computers but also emotionally and psychologically. A very good read.

I have been recommending this book to my public policy doctoral students for a decade, and used to assign a chapter as supplemental background reading in my econ class when we covered Bayes rule. Now that I'm teaching a section of our MPA stats course, it is a required reading. I wouldn't want this to be the only book my students read on stats, but I think it is an extremely useful supplement. (I always needed to read three textbooks in parallel when I was learning this stuff.) He pulls out the core ideas in a parsimious, readable, and humorous fashion.It is an old book, but intro stats is still intro stats.

To me statistics is a thoroughly fascinating study of how to put information about almost any subject which deals with controversial (or otherwise) variables in perspective. However, I have family and friends who illogically fear the undertaking of this study more than a root canal without anesthesia. It is for those that this book was written. It very gently leads the reader into the basics of the subject in an extremely friendly and non-threatening comic book format which, in all honesty, is actually humorous with some truly hilarious puns throughout the dialogue.This book is highly recommended for any student who may be facing a required course in college statistics with trepidation or for any adult who is searching for an effective, easily understood primer to introduce them to a fascinating way to use numbers and/or questionnaires to reach conclusions.

This book is not "bad". Sadly, it isn't too great either.A great deal of time is spent explaining the principles behind statistical conceptions, though only the most basic topics are actually addressed and a reader possessing no familiarity with the subject matter would still not be able to use statistics (or even remotely understand principles like standard error, sampling distributions, etc). If you are thinking of buying this, please don't use this as your main source of research --the other "Cartoon Guide to Statistics" (by Gonick) is a much more thorough, albeit slightly more challenging, read. I'd recommend it in conjunction with other educational resources (like Khan Academy). This should be saved for those folks that are barred from the Ferris wheel due to height restrictions.

This is a terrific book. I am using it to teach a 10-year old the concepts. It is ideal for this type of teaching. It is extremely clear and uses excellent, concrete examples to illustrate the points.

I got a copy of this after seeing it reviewed in Scientific American. Although I have had statistics classes and used the fundamentals for years, this book brought back the fundamentals of statistics. It really helps you visualize the data and how to best apply the tools. I am getting copies for everyone who works for me. Lucky them.

My son loves this book. I am all in favor or raising nerds and not jocks. The subject matter is for slightly older kids but he has had no problem understanding and following it. I ordered him these guys intro to Economics too.

I have taken three statistics courses at college level. I read another cartoon statistics book, too. That one was mostly about probabilities. This one gets into the guts of statistics. Some people get statistics right away and when they do, they can't be swayed. They just know, and they ruin the curve. The other 95% of us struggle. This is the best book I have ever seen on explaining statistics. Not only does it give you a clear understanding, it's—believe it or not—fun to read.

Bought this as a required text for a college class. That said, it's affordable, it actually helps me learn and understand math of all the incomprehensible subjects, and it's mildly entertaining. I'd recommend it.

A great read especially for people in the throes of planning and developing a unconventional style business - reads like a novel as well as a business guidebook. You cannot help but anticipate a sequel to see what happens next with Brooklyn Grange ....I run a small organic farm business and I was able to compare and contrast the experiences, decisions, and results made by Brooklyn Grange and broaden my own understanding of my successes and failures and farming as a business... a very supportive read for me!

Wonderful book, describing a wonderful project! Very well written. Shows how very diverse folks can work together for something wonderful.

Ms. Plakias is a talented writer who also happens to be a founder and vice president of Brooklyn Grange Rooftop Farm. Offering fantastic insights into business, life and community, this outstanding book will interest everyone who believes a sustainable future is possible.Ms. Plakias lovingly tells the story of BGRF and the people who made it happen. The author was one of a handful of like-minded Millennials who craved more than mental labors. The onset of the Great Recession, which revealed the immorality of finance capitalism, compelled her and a coterie of fellow New Yorkers to try their hands at a more authentic kind of work offering more than financial reward. As the author introduces us to the remarkable individuals who turned vision into reality, we can not but gain admiration for the intelligence, determination and spirit of everyone involved in the venture.However, Ms. Plakias understands perfectly well that bottom-line profitability is crucial. On that point, it was interesting to see how BGRF used data to negotiate contracts and plan their growing strategies in a way that maximized revenues. Of course, locating the farm on a roof top in NYC allows the enterprise to market produce to local restaurants and other specialty end users who are willing to pay above-market rates for privileged access to fresh, healthy and tasty organic foods.Ms. Plakias goes on to talk about a number of related issues that should interest business and general interest readers alike. She discusses the importance of selecting partners who understand the value-add of the business to their own. For example, BGRF had some difficulty finding the right site until they found a landlord who was interested in raising the value of the property to tenants and community. The farm offered an urban escape that was ideal for hosting events such as weddings, film premiers, photo shoots, and the like; thus raising the profile of the property and of course, its value.Ms. Plakias emphasizes that farming remains the business' core competency. To be sure, success has spawned opportunities to parlay the partner's expertise into green roof consulting services across the city. THE FARM ON THE ROOF caught my eye because I’m considering growing vegetable crops. However, I live on a farm in the country, and I couldn’t imagine running a farm on a roof in New York City. But I thought the idea of a rooftop farm was genius, because there are so many advantages to using such an underutilized space.THE FARM ON THE ROOF is the story of Brooklyn Grange, a business that focuses on the triple-bottom-line: people, planet, and profit. The farm started as a way to prove that yes, urban farming can be fiscally and agriculturally sustainable. They started operations in 2010 and are still going strong five years later, having learned a multitude of lessons and how to, in their terms, “monster it.”I thought the book was quite interesting. Much of it deals with setting up and launching the business, finding opportunities for growth, and developing alternate revenue streams. Although the subject is, of course, the rooftop farms, it’s easy to apply those lessons to other businesses. Entrepreneurs with super crazy ideas might find some tips too, because who would have thought of fundraising for an urban farm?I enjoyed the author’s writing style. It’s very readable, entertaining and informative. You know how business books can be dry or boring? That wasn’t the case here. Anastasia Cole Plakias is one of the founding partners of Brooklyn Grange, and it was easy to see her passion and pride in every page. I liked that she wasn’t afraid to admit to her own faults in the business world, and how she relied on her partners to help out there, just as she helped them.Reading THE FARM ON THE ROOF left me feeling hopeful. It was so great to see a business that wants to help its community prosper. It was also great to see a “crazy” idea really take off, to show that yes, you can follow your dreams, succeed, and leave the world a better place all at once.
