Not to be a complete cornball, but I knew I was dizzy with love for this 18th century Chinese masterpiece when I stumbled over a passage where the incorrigible servant Tealeaf goes off on a bully with a wonderful verbal takedown, adding "Be glad we haven't [naughty word]ed your dad."...ah! I love learning about other cultures!But really, 'dizzying' is the best word for this wonderful book. The central family tree is bursting into an entire forest, the narrator shifts in and out of plotlines willy-nilly ("Who the heck is this person again?" I said way too often), the Rongguo estate is described in extremely intimate detail, there are poems on every other page, and there is some proto-magic realism going on the whole time with demons, immortals, and fairies existing in dreams and maybe real life. It's all so...fascinating. It made me genuinely excited for reading in a way I haven't been in a long, long, long time.Just like with any love, time for me to fess up there are some...issues. First of all, this is just 1 of 5 volumes, so it ends kinda abruptly and with 0 resolution. In fact, there is almost never any resolution ever. Or a plot period, to be honest. The story just saunters and putters around. Even the central love triangle between Dai-yu, Bao-chai, and Bao-yu hasn't really budged much so far (and by the way, Bao-yu is an incorrigible little brat. It aggravates me how much I like him).But I cannot emphasize enough how much I enjoyed all of this. My tip is to not fret so much about trying to figure out what's going on or how everyone relates to everyone. Once I just relaxed, I surprised myself how invested I got in Bao-yu, Xi-feng, Grandmother Jia, Aroma, Tealeaf, and all the big and petty going-ons at the mansion. I can absolutely see why scholars dedicate their lives and livelihoods to Cao's sprawling, funny, and heartbreaking work.......I reckon I'll need a cigarette bad by the time I'm finished with this whole thing.

This--the whole 5-volume set--remains China's greatest novel, and possibly the greatest novel in any language. It is the subject of a whole field of studies in China ("Red Studies," from the more usual Chinese title of the book, HUNG LOU MENG, "A Dream of Red Mansions"). It really should be read by every educated person. The other reviews on Amazon summarize the book well. Some of them comment on the translation's accuracy, which I cannot do, being too feeble in my Chinese to follow its difficult prose. There are several things to add, however. I'm currently reading it for the 3rd time (I have also read the abridged translations), with an eye to studying the ways emotion is represented, for some work on emotions across cultures that I am involved in. The interesting thing here is that the whole incredibly diverse, elaborate, and minutely described emotional landscape of the novel is instantly and totally accessible and comprehensible to a sensitive western reader (at least, to with some knowledge of Chinese conventions). There is nothing remotely like the utterly alien, incomprehensible emotional and personal landscape that stereotypes and superficial western accounts ascribe to the Chinese. There is also nothing like the utterly socialized Chinese, incapable of individuality, seen in most western accounts of cross-cultural psychology. In fact, Cao's characters are sometimes quirky, sometimes downright eccentric, and always individuals and characters. This is (of course) a much more accurate portrayal of Chinese persons than the stereotyping western literature. The western reader is even apt to do as Chinese readers often do, and identify Cao's characters with people they know. Cultural psychologists take note. First is the stunning level of social commentary here, focused tightly and relentlessly on the plight of women in a traditional elite North Chinese household, but also on the plight of the servant and commoner classes in that elitist situation. Cao Xueqin explores every possible misfortune that can befall good women (including being corrupted into not-so-good women). Cao was humorous and gently ironic. The brilliant but feckless and unpredictable hero Bao-yu survives largely because of his infinitely caring, sensible, always-there maid and lover Aroma. Several of the other characters also depend on servants who are conspicuously more sane and competent than their masters and mistresses. Nobody in the English-language literature seems to point out that this was part of a movement. The great poets Zheng Xie and Yuan Mei were exact contemporaries of Cao Xueqin. Cao would probably have known their work. They had the same socially critical stance. They had the same highly empathetic attitudes toward women, including women of the servant class. If the latter phrase sounds very feudal and hierarchic, reflect, American readers: our poets and novelists are very often elite New Englanders and New Yorkers; you know they have servants; yet it will be a cold day in Hell before you find a sympathetic portrait of a maid in any of their stuff. Cao is way ahead. Zheng and Yuan were also capable of the same sort of intensely personal, intimate, open writing about love that Cao managed so well. There is a wonderful translation of one of Zheng's more painful and personal love poems in V. McHugh and C. Kwock, WHY I LIVE ON THE MOUNTAIN, a booklet that should be more widely known--alas rare and obscure. Moreover, this humanistic attitude--toward women, or just toward everybody--spread to Japan; think of Rai Sanyo and Ryokan. I doubt if they ever heard of Cao, but they surely had read Yuan Mei and very likely had read Zheng and others. There were a good number of women writers at the time. Some were proteges of Yuan Mei. No one seems to know what happened to the women in Cao's own personal life. Chinese society in the early Qing Dynasty was horribly hierarchic and oppressive, not least to women, but the countercurrents represented by Cao and others were powerful and important. They lie behind modern women's movements in East Asia.

For people that are accustomed to the cultures of the West (Americas, Europe) it might be a chore to get interested in this book. The pace seems to be a little slow but that is because the details of daily life in China days past are different and they might just slip right past you. If you're interested in how life was lived in that part of the world, this book will be a masterpiece, as it has been in China itself.

This book about customs is worth more than a history book in order to understand how people lived. This is not a history book, it is a novel of customs, more about what people thought, about respect, subservience and privilege and mores.

Lots and lots of pages and every one of them worth it! I first read a more abbreviated translation of this story for an anthropology class back in the early 70s.

I love this type of book (Jon Krakauer's books and some I've read about the Tour de France immediately come to mind), but this one gave me a headache. It's clear that Michael Kodas put a lot of time and effort into collecting this information, but the format he chose to use is painful. In this book, he is chronicling various mideeds over a 10+ year period. There are two or three (I'm not even sure) main stories that intersect or at least run somewhat parallel, but it's impossible to keep the characters and timelines straight with all the jumping around. It got to the point where I, who love this type of real story, wanted to toss this one. I was so confused that I just didn't care anymore.I struggled with this rating. It's well written, with no obvious typo/grammatical errors, but I don't know why his editor or publisher didn't suggest another way to tell these stories that would have been more reader-friendly or make the flow more coherent. I'm still not really sure what the "Fate of Everest" is because that wasn't really addressed in the end.

Well written, meticulously researched stories of very low behavior from the top of the world. Of all the Everest books I have read, no others have mentioned wide spread theft of oxygen, tents, warm clothing, sleeping bags, crampons, and even medications that could mean death to the rightful owners. This seems particularly prevalent on the higher camps where they do the most damage. Base Camp seems like a boom town in the California Gold Rush. Everything is for sale from T-shirts and alcohol to prostitution. Dishonest, incompetent guides preying on weekend warrior climbers are common and can also lead to death. These are sad, frightening tales.

Two stories show the problems on Everest. It is the bad side of human nature coming to the fore. It is a book need to read. It shows how need to take care, the mountain may kill you, but then again others may also kill you. Theft of essential gear, guides who are not. The old ideas of looking after others seem to be exactly that - old. The colourful characters may be the ones to avoid. Also the way people will do it on the cheap and either steal or hope others come to the rescue - when they may not. The story of David Sharp is poignant. It can take a bit to keep the narrative together but worth the effort.

Journalist and Everest veteran presents a picture of the great mountain as lawless and unregulated as a gold rush town in the 19th century. It is a fascinating account in which theft, fraud, negligence and mayhem are all present and accounted for.On a mountain in which the fragility of life is so evident even small crimes as sleeping in someone's tent and sleeping bag can be life threatening larger crimes can have dire consequences. As Kodas states:"Those attempting to domesticate The Goddess Mother of the Universe with ropes and satellites shouldn't be surprised that she isn't submitting gracefully to being a mere mortal's mountain."At high altitude with little oxygen the brain becomes impaired as does judgment at a time when they are both most needed. Memories blur and the mind becomes confused, reality becomes obscured. The focus becomes the summit and we find people quite willing to step past the dying in their quest for the top.Kodas explains that there are high stakes on Everest money, fame and prestige are all things which will bring out the criminal element. Selling dysfunctional oxygen containers, lying about experience, neglect and shirking responsibilities, spousal abuse, threats, assault and fraud are all detailed in High Crimes: The Fate of Everest in an Age of Greed. If you find this interesting especially with the setting of Mount Everest, this is a book you should read.

I've read books about climbs to the summit of Everest, but this is the first one I've read to focus on the self-absorption, single-mindedness, and loss of human decency that accompanies preparations and the actual climbs on this mountain. To think that there are people who will take money to "lead" and supply a team of climbers, but then leave the paid customers to fend for themselves with equipment that fails, oxygen tanks that don't work, and lie about it all in such a dangerous place is so hard to understand. The stealing of food, sleeping bags, and equipment and refusal to assist people desperately in need of help shows a terrible loss of human decency in a deadly place. Admittedly, all climbers should be aware of the dangers and real possibility of not returning, but if one takes a lot of money assuring people they will be accompanied to the summit with proper equipment, that person should be relied upon to do that or be held accountable. Very interesting read.

I just finished reading Breaking In from cover to cover, and have gone through like three highlighters in the process. I think to say that it is the best book any advertising student could ever read to prepare them for building their portfolio is a severe understatement. I'm redoing my whole portfolio from scratch because of the book, and for good reasons: the vast amount of insider information contained in this book is astonishing.I especially like the layout because [for the most part] William asks the same set of questions for everyone, so soon you'll see a pattern of what most of them are looking for. This will help you tailor your book to be the best it can be and have the greatest impact possible. Remember, it's your book, not anyone else's, so you, above all people, have to be ecstatic about it. But this book will be your greatest tool in terms of actually "Breaking In". If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would.

This book first caught my interest after I read a few interviews on its official site. I then purchased the book not really knowing how much it would truly help. A simple review cannot explain the value of this book. I would read between three to five interviews a day, take notes, and ponder on what I read. Then I did my best to apply it to me. I ended up learning a lot about the industry and eventually landed a job within my three months of reading.This book has done more for me than my schooling and work experience combined. I believe it's partly because the insights shared are from highly successful and intelligent people in advertising. This book can help you get to where you want to be regardless of where you're at now.

One of the most valuable books I've ever purchased. I'm a young writer trying to build a portfolio from home and the amount of advice given in this book is priceless. I'd pay $100 for this book knowing the quality of information it contains and in such abundance. Over 100 interviews with the people that you want to work for. If you're an advertising student or someone trying to break into this industry on their own, this book is a MUST HAVE.

Good book. Worthwhile - but trust me, take the plunge and go to a portfolio school. It's a people business and the connections you make are almost as important as your abilities.

I got more useful advice from this book than from two years of ad school. This is an amazing resource for students, juniors or anyone considering advertising as a career.

This is a brilliant idea. Most of these portfolio books are all the same: do a visual solution campaign, do a headline campaign, 5-7 print campaigns of 3 ads, etc, etc. Those books serve a purpose but (1) they are getting really dated as the industry changes faster and faster and (2) they are a one-size-fits-all approach. The industry isn't like that. What they look for at CP+B is going to be very different from McCann. Even within agencies, different people have different opinions. Anyway, this is a totally different format. It's just interviews with creative directors, from Dan Wieden and David Droga level down to senior creatives who would probably see your book before it gets to a CD. Also some recruiters (who are important players in the game) and a couple ad school directors. The questions/topics are pretty consistent: what do you look for in a student portfolio? How important is finish? Can sketches be enough? Long copy? Should you show non-advertising stuff and what kind of stuff works? How to get in touch with the CDs you want to work for, how to interview, job-hunting strategies...etc. It's pretty interesting to see how one creative director has a completely different opinion from another on certain questions. This is a great book for an ad student or someone making their first book. I actually think anyone in the industry would find this really interesting, even if they have a great job. It also gives you good insight into how these people think and what the industry is like, which might be great for someone who just wants to figure out if advertising is for them. However, if you have no experience and have taken no ad classes don't expect this book to teach you how to make an ad. This book is valuable for people who are a little more advanced than that. If you really want nuts and bolts basics about how to come up with concepts, etc. go with "Hey Whipple Squeeze This" by Luke Sullivan or "The Advertising Concept Book" by Pete Barry. Then read this. And you'll probably have to take some classes or go to ad school too. It's getting harder and harder to get into advertising as a creative.

Wow! Spencer gives us a very thorough look at advertising and what it takes to get in.Technology is leading advertising through a step-change, and it's an exciting time to break in. Spencer provides a detailed scan of portfolios and what Creative Directors (the people who hire you) are looking for. Spencer's interviews give abundant practical advice on job-hunting, interviewing, what not to do, etc. The interview style is a great strength of this book, because the information is unfiltered and remains free from a framework imposed by someone else. Spencer brings us to the experts with the feeling that nothing is lost in translation. While a terrific book for folks considering advertising as their main gig, the book's potential is much broader. With changes in advertising impacting so much of our world right now, anyone can benefit from understanding what the leaders of the field are thinking, and how they are poised to change with the changing technological tides.
