I love mysteries during this period, however this series was hard to read. Rose it's very illogical and takes senseless risks. On the first mystery of the series, I could somewhat why would she be involved. However on this second installment her involvement didn't make any sense. The characters are poorly developed and Rose/Nellie that expects to live under this persona does an awful job of being Rose and hiding her secret identity. She goes around telling her secret to the worst people. Why couldn't she instead of revealing her identity to the detective (a Poirot wannabe) , tell him that she was fulfilling a promise to her dead friend? That she had promised her companion that she would help him find her brother? This series is off my list.
I did receive a free ARC copy of this book, but this is my honest opinion and I would have bought book had I not had the ARC copy. Baker is such an interesting writer with a variety of mystery genres at her fingertips. With this book Baker continues this new series, begun with A Subtle Murder, with another excellent mystery with a great sense of time and place, a fascinating plot, and intriguing characters.Rose, our heroine and intrepid detective, is now in England, and she is no sooner off the boat from India than she witnesses a violent altercation, which seems to lead to a murder. In escaping the scene Rose loses her locket, pictured on all the covers, which is her only link to the mysteries of her own past. These mysteries make Rose an unusual heroine.I eagerly await book 3, which as yet has no release date listed.
I read a lot of mysteries, probably two to three a week and I barely made it thru the first book in this series and I could not make it thru this one. The characters are not developed. I do not know if the author is trying to be cute or what by using a famous literary detective's name and spelling it differently but making it sound almost like the Agatha Christie detective. But what bothered me the most is the plot is contrived and the author is forcing her characters to actions that are contrived and not natural or reasonable. If it is a rainy day and there is nothing else in the house to read then I suggest you buy another book not this one.
This book picks up where the first book ended. The mystery was solved in both books. No cliffhanger. Ruby no sooner gets off the ship when she witnesses two men arguing. In her hurry to get away she loses her locket. One of the men gets killed.Ruby is living in London with the Beckinghams. Cousin Edward doesn't trust Ruby. He is always watching her. She keeps thinking about the murder and realizes one of the men looked like the Beckingham's chauffeur. She decides she must look into it. Come along with Rose as she rides this roller coaster. Twists and turns will hold your interest. I'm looking forward to book 3.I voluntarily received a copy of this book and I'm voluntarily posting a review. My opinion is entirely my own.
Another great book by Blythe Baker. Will the London Beckingham’s figure out Rose’s secret? Edward is suspicious and is watching her closely. What she doesn’t need is a murder to worry about too. But, right off the ship, she witnesses an altercation. Plus, she loses her cherished locket with the mysterious note. Will she ever solve that mystery? Read and find out, you won’t be disappointed! I can’t wait for book 3! I was given a free book in return for an honest review.
Poor Rose goes from one murder to another and doesn't seem able to resist getting involved. I enjoyed meeting her pretend family in London and finding out if they would accept her or not. The murder mystery was solved although I found it a little hard to believe Rose would go to a nightclub on her own in those days. The editing wasn't great and the use of measurements in metres (not used in Britain until many decades later) was why I only gave it 4 stars. I will definitely read the next book as the search for Rose's brother has me hooked!
I received an ARC of this book but the review is voluntary. I enjoyed the first book in the series (A Subtle Murder) very much and wanted to continue reading about the heroine in this 1920’s series. I love the time period and the author has developed interesting characters that make me want to read more. I hope there are many more books to come in this series.
I've read the first two books in this series, but won't continue with the rest of them. And book two is a spoiler for book one. The stories are contrived, too fantastic, not real.
