About the Author

September Williams is an American physician-writer, bioethicist and filmmaker. All of her work seeks a better understanding of and between ourselves. She focuses on promoting resilience for people who are ill, aging, dying, or stressed by environmental and humanitarian violation. Yet, her writing is fired by the humor which allows people and characters to make it through hard times. Her first novel, and the first in a series of three books, is Chasing Mercury, a romance-suspense-memoir about families committed to human and environmental rights. September's nonfiction writing covers health disparities, bioethics and film. She is a member of the National Writers Union (AFLCIO/UAW 1981), an affiliate of the International Federation of Journalists, and the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities. Though raised in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area, September is a graduate of the University of Winnipeg Collegiate Division and has a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Manitoba, Canada. She attended Creighton University School of Medicine, and completed internal medicine residency at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. A tribute to her vanguard nature, September holds three fellowships which did not exist the day she started medical school. She was an ASPEN (American Society of Enteral and Parental Nutrition) Clinical Fellow in surgical hyperalimentation at Chicago Medical School; a Lowell T. Coggleshall Fellow at the University of Chicago MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics; and an American College of Geriatric Medicine / HRSA Clinical Geriatrics Fellow at the University of California, San Francisco. A significant concentration of Dr. Williams' clinical work has been in acute care, emergency medicine and palliative care. Public medical facilities have been her primary venues of practice in Chicago, Boston, New Mexico, Mazimbu - Morogoro Tanzania, and San Francisco. While at the University of Chicago, MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics, September was particularly encouraged to continue writing by the late philosopher and author, Stephen Toulmin. With him, she explored how universal stories influence peoples' expectations of medicine and science, autonomy and justice-particularly when adapted to screen. Dr. Williams subsequently learnt her film craft in the screenwriting and directing MFA program at Columbia College, Chicago and at Boston University, while also working in an inner city trauma center. She was a National Endowment for the Humanities Institute Fellow in Black Film, at the Zora Neal Hurston Center for the Documentary. Dr. Williams is a co-editor, author, and reviewer of books, articles and films related to medical and bioethical issues. Over twenty-five years, Dr. Williams has provided more than a thousand lectures and consultations in clinical and organizational bioethics. Beyond her hospital based service and teaching, some of this work has been for the Centers for Disease Control, the National Center for Bioethics at Tuskegee University, Harvard AIDS Institute, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Center for Practical Bioethics, the American Academy of Pain Management, and the McGann Women & Health Lecture Series at Stanford University. Dr. Williams retired early from the San Francisco City and County's Laguna Honda Hospital-God's Hotel. September has two millennial adult children and lives in Marin County, California, where she dances, open water rows the San Francisco Bay, and writes.

I loved this well written and beautifully presented book. David Coggins, aside from being a talented wordsmith, is an arbiter of taste and style. Though the book is geared toward men who already have a penchant for the finer things, there is plenty of advice here for everyone (women too), especially when taken as "big picture" (the tipping section, as pointed out in another review, is about tipping well in general, no matter the situation, don't get caught in the semantics). The book reinforced many of my own feelings, while calling me out at the same time. David is never preachy in his approach, often admitting his own shortcomings. It's a fun, quick read (I completely finished it on a single flight), filled with great insight that challenges modern conventions of what it is to be a person in a society. It made me nostalgic for a time I've never lived in — maybe one that never really was. I immediately made an appointment with a barber to tame my beard. Highly recommended.

***THIS BOOK WAS RECEIVED FROM A GOODREADS GIVEAWAY***In a world becoming increasingly modern and digital, it’s a little odd to find a book like Men and Manners, especially since its weird page colors make it seem like it was written in the 1950’s. While this book did have some pieces of advice, it seemed to be as specifically tailored (like a high-end tuxedo) to Manhattan, New York, instead of being general advice for men in Manhattan, Kansas. Many of the locations and businesses explicitly mentioned in this book were complete mysteries to me since I don’t live in New York City. These references made it seem like the manners advice wasn’t relevant to me at all.While I would have appreciated more thorough explanations of why particular manners should exist, this book seemed to be mostly filled with anecdotes from east coast elites about their opinion on certain matters. Sure, some of the people who provided their views were experts in their fields, but it would be better for the target audience (which I’m assuming is young men) to have an explanation as to why your shoe color should match your belt color. From my viewpoint, this book seemed like a lot of young Baby Boomers / older Gen-X-ers subtly complaining about Millennials and their habits/trends.Despite the apparent bias on the part of the writer(s), this book did contain many pieces of useful advice, even if a lot of it—if not most of it—boiled down to common sense and common decency. Another aspect I seemed to notice with this book is that it is also aimed at the moderately wealthy, especially considering all the expensive hotels, restaurants, and businesses mentioned. I don’t think I’ve ever stayed at a hotel with a doorman. Consequently, it seems that manners are only available to the rich when it’s the less-wealthy among us that often need the gentle nudging toward good manners.A primer for young men living in New York City, I give Men and Manners 3.0 stars out of 5.

I'm a protestant, and this book gave me a lot of food for thought. It asks valuable questions and traces powerful testimonies as God calls people from all walks to faith.

Best book on the market for non-Catholics to teach them about the Catholic church teachings. Stories of converts to theCatholic church. Every story is different. Great book.

We needed Patrick Madrid's book back in the 1970s!!!!!!!This book was 10 times easier to understand (and fun to read) for a novice like me. Karl Keating's book Catholicism and Fundamentalism was a struggle for me to understand.Our country's Catholic schools failed us in the 1970s here in the midwest and this book needed to exist back in the day!

I read this book in no time and bought more to hand out to " Evangelise ". It's eleven 20 page stories by different converts and how they journyed home to the Catholic church. Hard to put down.

Overall, I enjoyed reading the conversion stories in "Surprised by Truth", and I would recommend the book to anyone who is trying to discern whether to become Catholic or trying to understand the reasons why people might go from Protestantism to Catholicism.In most of the cases, the converts had been or had become Christians of some denomination before becoming Catholic. As a result, most of them had a pretty thorough understanding of the Christian faith prior to considering Roman Catholicism. Also, many of them have good credentials and have gone on to do serious Catholic apologetics.What stood out the most was the fact that most of the stories recounted long periods of careful, thoughtful deliberation and research. In other words, these conversion stories weren't the result of cultural, aesthetic, or emotional attraction. Rather, they came about through patient consideration.I also liked the fact that most of the stories avoided attacks on Protestantism - most were fairly civil. Given the serious and emotional nature of conversions, I found this to be impressive.I give it four stars because I would have liked to have heard more stories, but there are websites as well as other additions of the book which help to supplement the stories here.

I feel now that if confronted with questions from non-Catholics, I have some ammunition to allow myself to be engaged in a discussion (with the help of the Holy Spirit of course), and not be so afraid.

Everyone should read this series of personal testimonies. It will change your life!! Patrick Madrid is brilliant when it comes to finding people whose life have been transformed by finding the Truth.

I think the history section is worth the cost of the book alone. This is a great read for anyone that's new to the Presbyterian Church or just wants to learn about another denomination. The writer doesn’t pick and choose the parts of our history in order to make Presbyterianism look perfect. I believe it’s well known that the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) has a history of liberalism. Lucas does a great job to point out where the church went wrong and how the ship appears to be headed in the right direction with the emergence of more conservative branches, specifically the PCA.The sections of the book devoted to Presbyterian theology and worship aren’t new or enlightening, but that’s probably due to the fact that there are so many other books that dive a little deeper into Reformed Theology specifically. With that said, if you want it all in one book, then this is a great read. From our beliefs, to our worship practices to our history this is a very complete portrait of what it means to be a conservative Presbyterian.

Sean Lucas was a fundamentalist baptist who became an evangelical Presbyterian. This, as he admits, is a pretty common story for folks in the PCA (Presbyterian Church in America - both Lucas' and my denomination), especially in the south. This book is an attempt to make that transition a little easier. Lucas was a professor at Covenant Seminary and now is a pastor in Mississippi.Lucas does a good job of laying out what he calls "vanilla Presbyterianism" and does so by looking at basic Presbyterian theology, some practices (especially church practices) that differentiate evangelical Presbyterians from other evangelicals, and lastly some history - both of the reformation and reformed churches in America.I think Lucas believed he was writing a book for anyone coming to a Presbyterian church that doesn't come from a Presbyterian background. The book works very well for someone who may be moving from a fundamentalist background to the PCA (like Lucas did). But in my context, this is not the normal means by which someone comes into the PCA. Far more common in my city is someone coming to the PCA via the parachurch (choosing an evangelical church for the first time), or someone leaving a non-denominational or vineyard church longing for more historical emphases in the worship service, or exegetical teaching from the pulpit. Given those groups of people, I'm not sure this is the first book I would hand them. Rather than being rah-rah Presbyterian, I'm much more inclined to linger over the basics of the gospel, evangelical Christian orthodoxy, and finally Reformed theology in broad strokes. I could see using this book for officer training, or even more for candidates boning up for ordination exams, but not so much for people seeking membership in my church.I suppose there is room for a similar book with these other groups of people in mind. Maybe I'll get around to writing one someday.

This book is a MUST read for every Presbyterian in the US. It will broaden your understanding of the historic roots and biblical truths and Standards true confessional Presbyterians hold 'fast' to over the centuries with a great encouraging view for pressing on towards the 'Celestial City'.

Sean's journey is much like my own. If you're a Baptist on the fence about joining the PCA, get this book.
