About the Author

Ian Falloon was born in New Zealand in 1952 and studied engineering and music at Victoria University, Wellington. After a career as a symphony orchestra oboist was brought to an end by a motorcycle accident, he began writing articles about motorcycles for magazines. His first book, The Ducati Story, has run to several editions and has been published in three languages. The success of The Ducati Story led to a series of Ducati books and histories of Honda, Kawasaki, BMW, and Moto Guzzi motorcycles. He has now written many books about motorcycles, mostly historical but also restoration guides. With an interest and passion spanning decades he now concentrates on collecting and restoring older Italian motorcycles, particularly Ducati, MV Agusta, Laverda, and Moto Guzzi. Ian Falloon lives in Australia, and is ably supported in his projects by his wife, Miriam, and sons, Ben and Tim.  James Mann is one of the world's leading car and motorcycle photographers, with more than 20 years of experience shooting for enthusiast publications, the motor industry, and businesses around the world. The other day, I read that something like 60% of enterprise code is still in COBOL, simply because it's been too difficult moving legacy systems to new platforms. That caught my attention and I got this to find out more. This is the newest book I've seen for COBOL. That's important not because COBOL has changed (not in a decade now) but because programming has changed and the coder's perspective has changed. Coughlan does a fantastic job of helping you understand both the computers and the programming tasks that COBOL was designed for. This mental model of how the first machines were programmed in COBOL makes it a lot easier to understand some of the things that would otherwise seem very strange. If you have a programming background and want to understand COBOL legacy code well enough to see what it is doing and tinker with it, this is a great book for getting up to speed.

This is one of a very few selections of texts on COBOL. As an experienced C/C++ programmer, Java, et al, the chapter discussions and examples make perfect sense to me. Much of the key words and examples for use clearly cross-over into C/C++.I was able to email the author for further information regarding COBOL, and he was very quick to respond to my questions.Overall, this is an excellent introduction to COBOL, IMHO.

Would be cooler if it also had SQL database interaction with it.

This is a good beginner's COBOL manual. It lays out the rules coherently.

I have nearly 2 decades of professional COBOL experience, including programming for Wal-Mart in its early days, and later for The University of Tennessee. I continue to teach COBOL as well. This is an excellent text for anyone with a basic understanding of programming. As noted by the author, this is not intended to be a first look at programming -- it is presumed that you are looking at COBOL as an additional language. As an instructor, I am planning to adopt this as a textbook. As a professional, I am happy to add this to my reference bookshelf. I applaud the author for providing such a valuable and concise resource for younger programmers who wake up and smell the coffee... the demand for COBOL programmers will only continue to grow, and those who learn it will find that they have gained an advantage in the programming market. Those with their heads in the sand will continue to repeat the urban legend that "COBOL is dead". Those with brains will get this book and mark a course for the future.

2 years ago I was looking for a good source to refresh my knowledge in COBOL programming, after having programmed extensively working at Amdocs about 15 years ago, and wanting to go back to it as a senior programmer in one of the major insurance companies.I found it very difficult to find a book!In my search on the web I found Michael Coughlan's site, which was very helpful.And now he has published the book - finally!It is comprehensive and effective -giving you the basics + examples + exercises and explaining in a readable, fluent way.I find it a great source, both for programmers looking to go into COBOL programming, and as a reference for those of us currently programming in COBOL.

I'm a beginner with Cobol but have experience with other programming languages. I was searching for recently written book covering Cobol programming but had a hard time finding one. I was very happy when I came across Beginning Cobol for Programmers. Beginning Cobol for Programmers gives a great introduction to people that haven't been working with Cobol before. It explains Cobol programming in a simple way and gives a lot of example code. It also have a lot of material to further the knowledge in Cobol. I really enjoy the book and would recommend it.

Interesting in the wake of marriage equality to read this screed, alarmed at the dangers of capitulating to the institution. I agree in principle with the idea that the focus on marriage takes us away from other, more important issues, and to a degree I also agree that - however paranoid sounding - as a group we're being sucked into that very essence of hetero-normativity we should be resisting. Finely written and argued. The Andrew Sullivan take-down is particularly welcome.

Michael Warner opens THE TROUBLE WITH NORMAL by tackling the imbedded sexual shame in our culture. He sees the desire of gays and lesbians to marry as part of their desire to be accepted as "normal" and a part of mainstream culture. The desire for marriage comes about in many of the same ways for gays and lesbians as it does for heterosexuals. Marriage, in Warner's words, is yoked to the benefits of status, respectability, and other countless privileges, such as health care, housing and tax preferences, and parental rights. He recommends separating these rights from legal marriage, which the state already regulates in ways that are too intimate and controlling. He says we should redefine "family to reflect the reality of people's [extended] relationships." (page 120) Many states still have laws prohibiting oral, anal, and group sex, even for married persons. Warner describes most eloquently how gay marriage is likely to alienate other sexual "deviants" who are lower on the sexual hierarchy, such as prostitutes and other sex workers, transgendered persons, and others. Those who prefer some kind of public sex or "who aspire to a different kind of sexual maturity besides that of a married couple" will be further ostracized and demonized by the split in the LGBTQ communities into those who are married and those who are not (and don't want to be). This split mirrors what has already happened to people in the heterosexual communities who choose intimacies that are different from those who are choose traditional marriage. For non-gay populations, this would include "queers" who are polyamorous, bisexual, and celibate. Warner's analysis of the politics of shame applies to all "sexual outlaws." He raises important questions of sex education for everyone. He advocates the continued availability of public places where all kinds of sexual information is shared without fear of arrest or attack and where people might meet and mingle with those who share their preferences and passions.THE TROUBLE WITH NORMAL was, for me, a whole education in sexual freedom and autonomy, showing how the politics of sexual shame and the desire to "fit in" hurts us all. This book was amazing and offered a refreshing take approach to the LGBT+ struggle. As a queer activist with strong left sympathies, I've always found the way marriage is idolised as the be-all-and-end-all of queer rights to be problematic and this book perfectly explains how our obsession with hetero-normative marriage actually hurts us in the long run.

In this excellent book, Michael Warner explains how gay and lesbian activists are pursuing the wrong goal by advocating and working for the right to be legally married.Warner points out that, instead, the focus ought to be on separating certain legal benefits and perks that are now only available to those in a legal marriage from one's marital status. Such marriage-linked benefits not only discriminate against gays and lesbians, but also heterosexuals in nontraditional relationships, and singles of all categories. I found quite a bit in this book that was relevant and useful to me as a nonmonogamous heterosexual. Highly recommended.

i bought this for a queer theory class and read it and found it interesting. i don't think i would have picked it up just to read, though. it's definitely something that the average jane would need to discuss to get the most out of (at least i did), but as a class text it was good... parts of it were a little over the top for me, but informative and stretched my mind for sure.

I find it hard to believe that there are so many positive reviews to this book! I’m pretty bummed out to be honest. I bought this book to help my 3 year old work through his violent emotional outbursts and this book has the character running away from Home because he’s “so mad.” But at the end he gets his way so he decides he won’t run away today, but maybe tomorrow he will. Definitely not the message I want my son to ever ascertain. Total waste.

I wanted to purchase a Little Critters book because they were around when I was a child in the 80's and 90's. I chose this title because I have one child on the spectrum and one w Dyslexia who gets very upset doing her work... they both get aggressive, so this is a cute book they enjoy having read to them and a reminder that being angry is temporary and unnecessary.

I was hoping the end of this story would discuss how to deal with feelings. But I'm the end, Little Critter decides he is so mad that he is going to run away from home. So he packs up and gets distracted when he sees his friends all playing baseball and is happy that his mother allows him to go play with them. So he decides maybe he will run away tomorrow.Cute, but I was hoping for more about how to deal with our mad feelings, etc.

I purchased this book at the recommendation of a parent of a student I work with. She indicated it helps her daughter when she is upset. The only thing I don't like is the story line suggests the Little Critter is going to run away from home. He even packs up his things. In the end he decides to stay. I worry it is sending the wrong message to kids about how to handle their emotions. Running away from home is not a way to handle disappointment or being upset.The craftsmanship of the book is what you would expect from a kids paperback book. I felt the price was reasonable for this type of book. It was convenient for me to purchase this title on Amazon rather than trying to get to the book store.If you like the Little Critter series you may like this book. If you are looking for a book to support social/emotional regulation I would recommend something else.

This book is adorable, and so fun to read with a little one that is learning to read along. I always over exaggerate the I WAS So MAD and it always gets giggles. I read it often to my friends son when I watched him and now buying it for another friend for her baby boy. It is NOT a negative message, it shows how little kids can find small things so upsetting but then in the next second all is right in the world. It's life people, it in no way encourages kids to threaten to run away to get their own way. Puhleeease. Ha.And the illustrations are so cute!

The story line in this book is terrible. I thought it would be about how to handle big emotions in a positive way, but it isn’t. The worst part is when it suggests running away from home! I kept reading, thinking this idea would be addressed and it would be made clear that this is a dangerous way to handle anger, but it isn’t resolved at all. I couldn’t give this book as a gift or read it to my own child or even feel comfortable donating it to a library or charity. I threw it away.

I thought this would be more helpful with dealing with frustration etc. I did not like that the character wanted to run away because he was mad. I don't want my kid to runaway when they don't get their way or get mad. This book does not model what we would like to instill in our kids.

Love reading this with our toddler. He has started realizing emotions, and will say things like, "IM SO MAD!" I think this book has helped him with using words to express how he feels.

I only bought this to see why it had so many 5 star reviews. The blurb offers nothing about the story, so I entered with no information about this "world". There are no explanations as to what is going on in this place. I have no idea if they're humans or some weird species of humanoids that freaking knot up inside a woman when they're having sex like a dog. If you read the sample, it's a brutal rape, and that's basically what continues throughout the story. The story itself doesn't exist. There's no plot whatsoever, just disgusting rape. You might have some hope the "hero" I don't even know what he would be, is getting feelings for her, but since there's no plot, no ending—it just stops. I have no idea what could even happen. I'm all for darkness and alphas, but this is just gross. IF there was a story there, any type of closure, I would say it has potential, but I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out if they're werewolves or something. And reverse harem is a joke. This is just gang-rape and sharing a wh*re amongst awful men. If that's your thing, and you don't mind buying two books to see if there's an actual story, not just constant weird sex, buy it. If you're an actual woman who doesn't enjoy reading someone getting repeatedly assaulted, then pass.

This book seems to have reviews all over the place, but it seems the readers who rate the book lower are more offended by the story rather than by the story itself. If you don't like the subject matter, you should probably keep looking for one that you will enjoy more.I thought the author did a good job with this story and I really liked all of the characters. I thought the story typical of the genre. If you haven't read a book that features the shifter pack lifestyle, there is a hierarchy within where alphas, betas and omegas know their place. (Familiarize yourself with the Latin terms if you don't know them already. It will help you understand the dynamic.)This is a fun reverse harem shifter that will get you purring. I received an advance reader copy of this book through Hidden Gems in exchange for my honest review.

Yes, this book is crazy hot and will make you feel dirty reading it in all the best ways. But like her other Omega universe books, this story has a real honesty and relevance that many similar stories lack. You have to read deeper. Forced subjugation, thrown in social classes, the poor ignored...there's so much here that will remind you of the current climate, or what could easily happen soon. This reminded me so much of Handmaid's Tale, but only the way it hints at real issues. This world we live in could easily turn into a scary place with none of the entertainment value Cain gives here.

This book was written well and takes you through an interesting story of a black kid from Long Island who became a professional hockey player. The racist taunts he got from players and fans were heartbreaking and made you root for Mr. James. It also painted a vivid picture of what life as a minor league hockey player was like in the 70s and 80s. The reason I did not give this book five stars is because I was left wanting more. For example, Mr. James was close to making the NHL for years (played in the AHL, the next league down), how did he feel about this? Wouldn't it be frustrating being on the outside looking in for years? Another question I had were his relationships with those in the African American community, did he have fans? Was he ignored? Was he ridiculed by them for playing a "white" sport? Finally, what was his life like after retirement? Was he financially OK? Where did he live?Anyway, if it was a lousy book I wouldn't care so it wouldn't be an issue. The thing is, the story was compelling enough that I wish the authors had given us more information.

I purchased this book recently and read it over a vacation. The book covers the trail of career from a Long Island rink Vals father worked at, through his minor (youth) hockey, minor pro and the games he played in the NHL.To re-state the fact, he was the first American born African American player to play in the NHL.A lot of the book deals with the race based abuse Val had coming up through the ranks of the game. But he also had a lot of the same experiences most young men did coming up through the game, with a lot of the same pranks and adventures.Val was a tough hombre, but he also was persistent and followed his dream. He could have had more time in the NHL and was not given proper use in my opinion. So much of a career is dependent on teams management and coaching and ownership. The Leafs were always a team in the bright spotlight of scrutiny and pressure. I believe at the time ( by Val's jersey) were owned by the legend (both good and bad) Harold Ballard. Yeah things were a bit wacky under that regime.I had previously been involved in a book project about minor league hockey in a specific city and am always looking for hockey biographies and inside stories on the game and players particularly from previous eras. Much of Val's story may have been lost in time and it was indicated that some has been omitted for discretion. It took some luck as well as persistence to find him, a small story in itself. As my headline implies, I wish the book was twice as long, it was that entertaining and touching for me. Congratulations Val for having your story finally told, its well worth the price

Make sure you are comfortable with profanity before allowing your children to read this book. While the age range suggests this book is appropriate from a reading level perspective for kids in roughly grades 4-8, the content and language certainly may not be. This depends on individual views I guess, but the 'f word' is used regularly as are others. I also purchased the audio version for car rides, so reading it AND hearing it is a double whammy from my perspective. I just was not at all expecting this when purchasing for summer reading for my 7th grader. As far as a book review overall, it is a good read for boys in particular who aren't wild about reading and if your son happens to be obsessed with ice hockey, he will likely enjoy it, but just beware the language at the outset.

I loved the candor of this book, I mean Mr V. just told it like it was! The only thing I couldn't appreciate about this novel was all the accolades at the end. If the people thought so highly of Mr. V., why didn't he get more time in the pros? Also why didn't any of them do anything when the crowds at various stadiums were calling out the "n" word? America is an ill country due to their racist ways! It's real, sad when a person can't enjoy the sport they love because some ugly people think they don't belong. As for me I'm very proud Mr. V. was a hockey player! A black hockey player how great, thanks for this fantastic book Mr, V. By the way I really enjoyed the pictures as well.

Great story from a former Suffolk Duck defense partner. Skidmore... Brophy ... all great memories of a time long gone. It was an honor to play with this inspirational legend and being coached by Brophy. I still have a scare on my knuckle from a brawl were my defense partner Val pulled me out of the scrap by my collar. He lifted me up off my skates and placed me back down. That’s teamwork... I am sending this book to my older brother who played in the Met league.

I would highly recommend this book to any person who loves the game. This is a fantastic story of perseverance resilience and heart. I never even knew his name before reading this book and now I have so much respect for this man after everything he had to go through to achieve his dream. If u want a brutally honest portrayal of a kid who whatever had to be done to achieve his dream this is the book for you. I would give this a thousand stars if I could.

An excellent account of the trials and tribulations of a young man in his attempt to gain success in professional hockey. When one considers the fact he was black where a very small percentage are black, the treatment from fans could be merciless . He literally fought his way from the lowest levels to the ultimate top of the hockey world - the National Hockey League. He paid his dues in a time that fighting was considered by many as the easiest route to success, he showed that he under that he would be the target of many fighters seeking to boost their reputations. He started late when compared to Canadian kids but through his constant drive but through perseverance and constant drive to meet his ultimate objectives he rode buses for years and eventually met success.The book is sometimes written in some cases from the viewpoint of the language of the hockey dressing room. Consequently, ther reader should not be shocked.I enjoyed the book and would highly recommend in showing one of the difficult hockey life as one strives to make it to the NHL .
