"Gary Gorton is a master at combining financial history and economic theory. His work has been invaluable in illuminating the deep causes of financial crises and in helping to guide the policy response." Ben S. Bernanke, Distinguished Fellow in Residence, Economic Studies Program, Brookings Institution and Former Chairman of the Federal Reserve"The Maze of Banking demonstrates the great depth and relevance of Gary Gorton's research on banking and financial crises. Gary's research combines insights from modern economic theory and the insights of fresh empirical work guided by the techniques of economic history. By coming at an understanding of the financial system from two very different methodologies, Gorton's research produces insights about the past which are both new and still empirically valid in the modern financial system. Reading Gary's collected works together yields new lessons which were unclear from reading them separately over the years. The whole does appear to be greater than the sum of the individual parts." Douglas W. Diamond, Merton H Miller Distinguished Service Professor, Booth School of Business, University of Chicago"Read this anthology of papers written over the past thirty years and you will understand why Gary Gorton has been the leading voice in explaining the recent financial crisis. The sweeping perspective provides the basis for a coherent, comprehensive interpretation of current events, devoid of undue emotion and hasty conclusions. The Maze of Banking is a testimony to the depth of Gorton's analysis and the perseverance of his research." Bengt Holmström, Paul A. Samuelson Professor of Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology"To understand banking and financial crises, especially in their historical context, you really need to read Gary Gorton. Insights leap from every page." Mervyn King, former Governor of the Bank of England"Gary Gorton is unique in his ability to bring together fundamental insights from both history and theory to shed light on the essential nature of-and the risks created by-financial intermediation. The papers in this volume make it clear why he has been one of the most important voices on one of the most pressing economic policy issues of our time." Jeremy C. Stein, Department of Economics, Harvard University and Former Member of the Federal Open Market Committee

In The Maze of Banking, Gary Gorton brings together a coherent collection of research papers that provide the best available explanation of the financial meltdown in 2007/8. The book is heavy going in that each chapter after the first is, essentially a technical academic journal article. But the first chapter explains clearly what happened and how the content of each chapter supports that explanation.Essentially he describes a parallel banking system that is used by financial institutions and corporations with large and rapidly changing cash balances. It involves what are loans, for multiple millions of dollars that are backed by the pledge of securities. Often these are renewed each day, and the holder of the collateral may sell it right away if there is no repayment on time. The problem arose when doubts were raised about the true value of some of the collateral. Usually one could pledge a bit more (say 2%) in current value to get a loan, but in a very short period doubts about the value increased this amount from 2% to 40%. The problem was that the outstanding amount of collateral was between $10 an d$20 trillion, and there was no way to raise between $4 and $8 trillion more on short notice so there was a wave of panic selling that washed through the major financial companies of the world.I think that this book will be the definitive work on the underlying mechanism for the financial panic underlying the Great Recession.

I have set myself the goal of reading Mary Stewart's Arthurian Saga series this summer. This is the second book in that series.Once again we see events through the eyes of Merlin the Enchanter, as he narrates the story for us. We begin with Merlin traveling through the Mediterranean area after having safely delivered the baby Arthur into the keeping of those who will protect and raise him over the next several years. When Arthur is six years old, Merlin feels the call to return to England and to take up his own task of teaching and protecting the child. He finds Arthur strong and healthy and growing into the kind of human being that he had hoped to see; the kind of man who can be a brave, just, and benevolent king. The story of Arthur is so well-known, so ingrained in our cultural consciousness, that it seems pointless to spend space here on exposition. Stewart has taken those well-known facts, both historical and legendary, and has woven them into a tale of prophecy, magic, and valor. It's also a tale of jealousy, spite, hatred, and death. These latter characteristics are often traceable to the female characters in the story, who seldom come off as having a positive impact on events. Indeed, even the mention of one of the female characters often seems to portend shadows and disaster in the visions that Merlin has of the future. In relating the saga of Arthur and Merlin, Stewart does manage to reveal to us the diversity of people who made up the population of Britain in the days of - what was it? - the fifth century C.E.? If Arthur ever existed, and Stewart argues that there must at least have been a prototype, then that is probably the time period in which he lived.Of course, Arthur and his story have strong Welsh roots, but there were many other cultures that contributed to the lore. From the "Old Ones," the people of the forest, to the Picts, the Saxons, the descendants of Roman soldiers, and others, this was a very diverse group of people. Moreover, they worshiped many different gods and Merlin pays proper homage to them all. It was particularly interesting to me to see the way that the author integrated all of them into the story.Stewart tells the story in a relatively straightforward way, without trying to manufacture suspense. After all, we know what's going to happen before it happens, so why should she bother to try to fool us?Throughout the body of the work, the author gives ample foreshadowings of the conflicts and betrayals that are to come. Although Merlin is able to see into the future, there are things which he simply cannot change.Stewart was a very good writer and her creation of the settings of the story and the atmosphere were particular strong points both in The Hollow Hills and, previously, in The Crystal Cave. I would expect that to continue throughout the series.Near the end of The Hollow Hills comes the death of Uther Pendragon and the anointing of Arthur as the High King. Now, on to the glory days of the establishment of Camelot and to everything that came after.

This is the ULTIMATE Merlin/King Aurthur series.I have TRIED to read other Merlin/King Aurthur books/series and they just were lame and went over what every person (even those, which I am one of, not into the genre) is familiar with the legends.Mary Stewart took the original writings and legends and placed them into history seamlessly! She made them REAL historical figures. People who DID live. The writing is impeccable. The stories flow and you can't wait to read the next one! You are emersed into that historical world. It is vivid, alive, and swirling around you.Mary Stewart is one of the five greatest story tellers of the 20th century. She enthralls you, carries you breathlessly into her world and then slips you back into reality longing to go back again and again.I have read this series at least three times and I LOVE it more and more each time. This is a story/series you can read to/with your children. One to pass down as a family favorite!I can't wait until the urge to return to Mary Stewart's world filled with Merlin, King Aurthur, and the rest of the those that populate the legends hits me and I can once again be surrounded by them!

I think of the four principle books of this series The Hollow Hills is probably my favorite or at least tied with the Crystal Cave. Her ability to paint a picture of people and places that are no more and make them all seem like somewhere I've been and someone I might have known is legendary and she's at her best with these books. I have read and re-read all of these a number of times and I always find something I don't remember which paints a more complete understanding of the legend as she's painting it. IF you love the Arthurian legend; give these a try, I don't think you will be disappointed!

If this second book in Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy isn't a page-turner, I don't know what is. I mean this in a very good sense. Yes, the suspense is an important factor, but it is the, well, ensorcelling, character of Merlin that keeps the reader glued to the pages. Even when the world's eyes are on the young King Arthur towards the end, the reader's mind and heart are still with this version of Merlin that Stewart has conjured up - so to speak; For she has imbued this Merlin with an inner life as well as her own poetic sensibilities.Readers of medieval romances will be attracted to the work, of course, but so will lovers of the poetic and those concerned with the inner life. I shall let Merlin's spell fall on the reader here in his own words:"It is one thing to have the gift of seeing the spirits and hearing the gods move about us as we come and go; but it is a gift of darkness as well as light....One cannot be visited by the future without being haunted by the past; one cannot taste comfort and glory without the bitter sting and fury of one's past deeds."Further,"To remember love after long sleep; to turn again to poetry after a year in the market place, or to youth after drowsy and stiffening age; to remember what once you thought life could hold, after telling over with and calculating fingers what it has offered; this is music, made after long silence."I'm too spellbound myself to give this book less than five swirling stars.

As the second book in the Arthurian saga, it is right on par with the first book, which has been my favorite book since I was about 17 (40 years ago). I just love this simplistic telling of the Arthurian legend. It feels more "real," since it unfolds as an autobiography, since it is narrated by Merlin. This book covers the birth through early life of Arthur, up to his taking the sword from the stone. It's the perfect continuation of the Crystal Cave.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-In picture-book format, Gibbons provides the basic facts about two popular sports. Using short, clear sentences, she defines terms, explains the rules, and describes scoring. One line in each book mentions the equipment necessary for each game, but the information is well augmented by clearly labeled, colorful drawings showing additional gear, such as shin guards for soccer players or protective covering for the baseball catcher. Both books contain diagrams of the game fields. However, the words selected for the brief glossaries seem arbitrary; for example, "cleat" is defined in Soccer, but not in Baseball. These informative books will be enjoyed by new players or spectators of older siblings' events.Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Just like the other Gail Gibbons sports books, this book does a great job introducing the basics of the game to a child without getting bogged down in too many rules. It holds my child's attention so that he can understand what the game is about and the basic concepts. It doesn't go through the whole 9 innings (thankfully!) but still tells the child about the players, some of the rules, the baseball diamond and how to score.

I didn't pay attention to the dimensions described, so I was surprised to see that the book was smaller than I expected. However, this book is a great resource for young baseball fans. It is eligible for the nonfiction reading requirement for my first grader, who sometimes appreciates a break from historical or biographical topics.

Perfect for my young grandsons who knew little about baseball. Written at their level of understanding. We then went outside and had a great time simulating a game!

Excellent book for children, plus restores interest & knowledge in baseball for the older folks.

My son reads this on his own. It is almost like a how to book. Great book to help the reader understand how the game works.

I bought this for my son's fourth birthday last year. He loves baseball and I thought this would be a book that was both entertaining and educational. He loved it. We read it everynight for about two weeks and he began to understand what the different positions and rules were.It is a year later and we still read it occassionally just for the fun of it.

Nice for a younger child who is just starting out playing baseball.

Gift for 2 yr old.

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—Rashad Butler is a quiet, artistic teen who hates ROTC but dutifully attends because father insists "there's no better opportunity for a black boy in this country than to join the army." He heads to Jerry's corner store on a Friday night to buy chips, and ends up the victim of unwarranted arrest and police brutality: an event his white schoolmate Quinn Collins witnesses in terrified disbelief. Quinn is even more shocked because the cop is Paul Galluzzo, older brother of his best friend and Quinn's mentor since his father died in Afghanistan. As events unfold, both boys are forced to confront the knowledge that racism in America has not disappeared and that change will not come unless they step forward. Reynolds and Kiely's collaborative effort deftly explores the aftermath of police brutality, addressing the fear, confusion, and anger that affects entire communities. Diverse perspectives are presented in a manner that feels organic to the narrative, further emphasizing the tension created when privilege and racism cannot be ignored. Timely and powerful, this novel promises to have an impact long after the pages stop turning. VERDICT Great for fostering discussions about current events among teenage audiences. A must-have for all collections.—Ashleigh Williams, School Library Journal

Review

"ALL AMERICAN BOYS is a terrific story that will compel readers to consider who they are, what they stand for, and what they should stand for. It’s that good." -Richie's Picks*"With Reynolds writing Rashad’s first-person narrative and Kiely Quinn’s, this hard-edged, ripped-from-the-headlines book is more than a problem novel; it’s a carefully plotted, psychologically acute, character-driven work of fiction that dramatizes an all-too-frequent occurrence. Police brutality and race relations in America are issues that demand debate and discussion, which his superb book powerfully enables.” - Booklist, starred review*"Timely and powerful, this novel promises to have an impactlong after the pages stop turning. " - School Library Journal, starred review"The scenario that Reynolds and Kiely depict has become a recurrent feature of news reports, and a book that lets readers think it through outside of the roiling emotions of a real-life event is both welcome and necessary." - Publishers Weekly"...[The authors'] passion elevates the novel beyond aneeded call to action to a deeply moving experience." -Kirkus Reviews

“All American Boys” tells the story of Rashad Butler (black) and Quinn Collins (white) who don’t really socialize but go to the same school. When Rashad is involved in an incident on his way to a party, he starts getting a ton of attention. Throughout the book, we see how Rashad recovers from this incident and how people he would have never suspected support him. This book has points that will have you almost in tears of joy and points that leave you in shock. I noticed a change in the book's theme as it book goes along. It starts off almost hateful but then it has a theme of generosity or support near the end. Without spoiling too much, the events of the first chapter are never forgotten about. With every page, you see the effects of what happened. A quote from the book, “Nobody says the words anymore, but somehow the violence still remains. If I didn’t want the violence to remain, I had to do a hell of a lot more than just say the right things and not say the wrong things.” , perfectly reflects how I felt reading this book. The two authors Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely try to maintain a balance between Rashad and Quinn. The middle of the book is very focused on Quinn and him dealing with betrayal and his friends, while Rashad is focused on more in the beginning and end of the book. I guess this makes sense because Rashad was just in the hospital, but I feel that there was more he could have done at certain points. The support given to Rashad by his friends, English, Carlos, and Shannon, is the opposite of how Quinn’s friendships are falling apart. I am disappointed that some parts of this book were not as challenging for me, and also that there was no real struggle for me in deciding which side I was on, but I think it was a very good book. Although there were things they could improve on, the message is good and the book as a whole is definitely a 5/5. The book is the perfect amount of pages to last you a good week or two, and it is immersing. There were parts of this book where I would not put it down until my kindle died. I have read this book twice and I am reading it a third time. I would recommend this to every reading teacher out there. This is a must read and can replace books like “Old Yeller” and “To Kill a Mockingbird” in required reading. It gives a good stance on current political issues and gives different views on those issues. Every library, bookstore, and online bookstore needs to have this book. This book will brighten the minds of the latest generation while giving them a good time. This book is one of the best books I have ever read, and that really says something about this book. I look forward to reading the author's other books.

I was given this book as a present from my grandfather, John M, and reported on it to my seventh grade class. It was a wonderful tale of overcoming racism and police brutality. The main characters were Quinn, who was white, and who witnessed his school friend Rashad, who was black, being beaten by a white police officer. The white police officer had raised Quinn after his father died. This is a story about a conflict that Quinn had whether he could believe that his substitute father would do something so wrong. I thought it was very well written, how Rashad talked about artists because Rashad lover to draw, the suspense in the book, how Quinn would be about to do something and then the story would switch to Rashad so I had to wait to find out what would happen, the slang that they used was how people their age talk. I recommend it for anyone who is looking for a realistic book that talks about racism and how it still exists.

This bold and compelling YA novel tackles a sensitive and potentially incendiary topic—police violence against people of color—in an effective and realistic manner. Told from the alternating perspectives of two adolescent male narrators, the story demonstrates quite vividly the vast differences that exist between the worlds that each teen inhabits despite the school and community that they share.Rashad, an African-American ROTC student, narrates most of his story from a hospital room, where he’s recovering from the brutal violence he suffered at the hands of a white officer, who suspected him of attacking a woman and robbing a convenience store. The officer is a close family friend of Quinn, a white, well-respected son of an Iraqi War vet who was killed in action. Quinn, who is Rashad’s classmate but doesn’t know him well, witnesses the assault and spends most of the novel struggling with questions of racism, privilege, and inequality.Reynolds and Kiely wisely keep Rashad and Quinn apart for most of the novel—and the effect is powerful. This technique highlights the disparity in their worlds and the impact that each boy’s race has on his life experience. Very much a contemporary novel, the story alludes to fairly recent and well publicized acts of police violence against Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, and others. The novel is a quick read, yet that does not detract one iota from its impact or the authenticity of its social commentary. Reynolds and Kiely have crafted a gripping, trenchant narrative featuring believable characters coping with current social problems that have real consequences. This novel belongs in the hands of every teenager and secondary English teacher in the country.

My college English professor required us to read this novel in order to write an essay afterward. However, this novel is so good and exciting. Good for teenagers as well, because its not that hard to read and its written pretty well that you cannot leave it unless you finish it! In addition it gives the reader a new point of view for things around that he/she might not think about or realize before. Highly recommend!!

I loved teaching this book to English 12. My students were riveted by the style, the alternating narrators, and the plot that deals with social justice themes, and important topics that impact their lives. There are amazing videos by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Reily in which they together talk about why and how they wrote this book, and also give meaningful prompts to students regarding how they will work for more good in the world.

I was a bit discouraged by some of the reviews before I bought the book. But I found it a great book for my purposes, which involved gaining a solid foundation about the immigration laws. I think I got that by reading the book. I learned that there are many twists and turns involved with the process. So, I recommend the book to those who want a basic understanding of the different types of visas, who qualifies for each, and the many pitfalls to avoid in the application process. True, there are copies of the various forms that were not of interest to me, as a lay person in the subject. But I have a friend who is an immigration counselor. I now have a much better understanding of what she can get into with clients, and their specific situations and requests/needs. If she knows her stuff, she can really be helpful to folks who do not understand their rights or the pittfalls they need to avoid. For example, in many cases of applications, folks getting married will bar them from immigration, while others in the family who remain unmarried will be fine. Also, coming to the U.S. as a visitor or a student, one must be sure to indicate that they are not coming with the purpose of finding a way to stay. That kind of stuff can really cause you problems later. But if one comes as a visitor or a student, then finds that they want to get married and/or take a job, there are ways to make this work, legally. Come in illegally, and that process is much more difficult. Also, the book, at times, makes very personal comments about how great many visa applicants feel when they finally get approval. For many, it can take 10 or more years. As I have said several times, I recommend this book for its purpose of providing a basic understanding of the different types of visas, how they can be obtained, and the pitfalls to avoid in pursuing them.

lots of information in it.

Wish there were more sample filled out forms

The process of getting a green card may be simple or very difficult depending on more things than covered in this book. New higher fees to the government make this an often costly project. How to Get a Green Card is a mere introductory book for those of us wanting a general understanding of the subject without having to sift through web sites and legal language. This book covers topics in a concise manner such as the ways to get a green card, the waiting period after applying, family and special relationships, the visa lottery, the military route and adjusting status. All of these topics are available online.

Extremely well written and informative. A good precursor to "Fiance and Marriage Visas: A Couple's Guide to US Immigration". But not really needed as the above goes over everything you need.

Very useful

This book was very helpful. It is easy to read and understand with clear instructions.

bought this to further prepare my fiance and I about our upcoming tasks. Upon receiving it we found that we already had the info. but it would have been a great starting place if we hadn't already researched so much

National Book Critics Circle Award Winner (Nonfiction)PEN/Oakland Award WinnerBCALA Nonfiction Award WinnerGustavus Meyers Award Winner“This groundbreaking study documents that the infamous Tuskegee experiment, in which black syphilitic men were studied but not treated, was simply the most publicized in a long, and continuing, history of the American medical establishment using African Americans as unwitting or unwilling human guinea pigs . . . Washington is a great storyteller, and in addition to giving us an abundance of information on ‘scientific racism,’ the book, even at its most disturbing, is compulsively readable. It covers a wide range of topics—the history of hospitals not charging black patients so that, after death, their bodies could be used for anatomy classes; the exhaustive research done on black prisoners throughout the 20th century—and paints a powerful and disturbing portrait of medicine, race, sex, and the abuse of power.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Medical ethicist and journalist Washington details the abusive medical practices to which African Americans have been subjected. “She begins her shocking history in the colonial period, when owners would hire out or sell slaves to physicians for use as guinea pigs in medical experiments. Into the 19th century, black cadavers were routinely exploited for profit by whites who shipped them to medical schools for dissection and to museums and traveling shows for casual public display. The most notorious case here may be the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, in which about 600 syphilitic men were left untreated by the U.S. Public Health Service so it could study the progression of the disease, but Washington asserts that it was the forerunner to a host of similar medical abuses . . . African American skepticism about the medical establishment and reluctance to participate in medical research is an unfortunate result. One of her goals in writing this book, aside from documenting a shameful past, is to convince them that they must participate actively in therapeutic medical research, especially in areas that most affect their community’s health, while remaining ever alert to possible abuses. “Sweeping and powerful.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

I bought and read this book in 2012. I even used it in my own book, Through the Lens of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. However, it is still an important book for all to read. What struck me then and now are all the ways the medical establishment has undermined and denigrated the African body. When I encourage people to read the book, I tell them that the Tuskegee experiment is only one chapter in a book with 15 chapters. There has been so much under-the-radar activity that continues to encourage people to think less of the African Diaspora citizens who live with us. Our current Zika virus conversation is another twist for the books, which is probably an extension of the AIDS virus. Harriet Washington also takes us into a activities and conversation about Eugenics, which established stereotypes about African bodies more toxic and more menacing than biologically possible. This past week I was in a conversation about a Black woman who need a bone marrow donors. Her probably best match will be another black person, we're told. The protocols were established on Black patients in Ivy League hospitals for White patients, who use it much more often than Black patients. Thank you for opening my eyes about the insidiousness background from the medical/biological field. I look forward to your next work, hint, hint!

The history of White America and its African American slave population is often one of unimaginable cruelty and wickedness. It’s an history that perhaps some Americans are marginally curious about, and others manage to remain blissfully ignorant. Occasionally, a book comes along that reveals the extent of the cruelty and brutality of White America against African Americans, that jolts the marginally curious, and destroys blissful ignorance.“Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present” is a book that may shock and disturb the reader. A thorough and well researched work that supports each reported act of medical malpractice, abuse, and excess, as well as government acts of bio-terrorism against it’s own citizens, with well documented evidence. The book provides the rationale for the wide-spread African American, persistent and profound distrust of the US healthcare systemHowever, a book that would appear to be an outright indictment of White America’s treatment of it’s African American population, and justification for African American distrust of the US healthcare system turns out to offer a lot of compromise, including practical and feasible solutions for curbing potential acts of medical malpractice, abuse, and excessesThis is an extraordinary, well researched work; congratulations to Harriet A. Washington!

GREAT READ. EVERY DESCENDENT OF SLAVES SHOULD READ AND TEACH OUR CHILDREN THE HORRIBLE TREATMENT OF OUR ANCESTORS BY THE HANDS OF THESE EVIL DOCTORS AND NEVER LET OUR FORMER SLAVE MASTERS CHILDREN FORGET,,WE OWE IT TO OUR BEAUTIFUL STRONG ANCESTORS.

As a Black female and a medical professional, I find this book to be an "eye opener"! I work for a world class institution and have found that medical exploitation of minorities in general and poor blacks specifically, is on going. Income level play a major role in the disparities, regardless of what you hear, that "all of our patients are treated equally, regardless of income." Blacks must learn to speak up, question what it is you don't understand and not be afraid to ask for second opinions. You have a Patient Bill of Rights that should be posted in every medical facility. READ IT ! You have a right to ask that a doctor, nurse, aid personnel, data collector etc. speak in a language that YOU understand.Don't sign anything that you don't understand ! If you are having any type of invasive procedure, be sure that it is a Board Certified Specialist in that area of expertise performing it. Not a Resident Surgeon, unless the "expert surgeon" is present and observing and/or assisting. Get a POAHC and make sure it is someone who is vocal and assertive on YOUR behalf, when you are unable to speak for yourself. Having a degree is not a prerequisite for the latter.

This is such an important read for anyone interested in the history of black folks in the US and how the white population has continually oppressed the black population in cruel and gruesome ways. Washington is an amazing writer - even though she is writing about history (which can sometimes be a bit of a bore to read), she writes in a way that makes the text easy to read and understand, and make you want to keep reading. I also really liked how she focused on the prison system as a tool of medical oppression of the black community, because this point is often overlooked by a lot of scholars who decidedly chose not to pay attention to the prison population. Good book, great information!

This is just another reason why African-Americans deserve and should be demanding reparations! The US and possibly the world medical industry/profession owe a great debt to all the African-American families whose lives were destroyed, maimed or harmed by these experiments not to mention the racist stereotypes that were attached to us for the sake of "progress" Black people suffered treatment that wouldn't be applied to animals and I am sure this book is only scratching the surface of the atrocities committed.

I think this book is extremely important and informative, but I am disappointed by the poor copy editing. I am halfway through so far, and have found numerous issues with spelling, capitalization, and omitted letters, not to mention several ambiguous or redundant sentences. Yes, it's an emotionally difficult read, but someone at Random House should have taken the time to parse it more carefully!
