Ali Almossawi holds a Masters in Engineering Systems from MIT and a Masters in Software Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. He currently lives with his wife and daughter in San Francisco, where he works as a data visualization designer for Mozilla, while continuing to collaborate with his colleagues at the MIT Media Lab. Ali Almossawiâ€™s Bad Arguments is exactly the kind of book more people should keep at hand. In a few pages 20 different logical fallacies are identified and clarified. As something of a freebie there is a short glossary appended.I never quite understood â€˜post hoc, propter hocâ€™. I only thought I understood â€˜slippery slopeâ€™. New to me were the terms that address things like 'not a cause for a causeâ€™ or â€˜composition and divisionâ€™.Having read this slender book I cannot claim to have mastered these terms, nor will I always recognize them in the wild. Still for a book of barely 50 pages; almost Â½ given to illustrative cartoons, the learning experience is efficient.A few words about the illustrations. For all their childlike appeal each one is well captioned to reinforce the point of the explanation.This is one time I have to question the negative reviews. Too many are obviously driven by a demand for political purity that has nothing to do with the total content of the book. A few other complain that the logic is wrong â€“ I disagree. Others are of the opinion that the discussion is too shallow. This is not a text book.Unless you are a serious student of logical argument, Bad Argument may be the only reference you will ever need. A light hearted book with the ability to seriously improve your thinking, speaking and listening.

This Book seems like it was on the road to greatness, then decided to get published just a moment before it reached it. The design and layout of the book is flawless, and the drawings give off a creepy and simultaneously cute vibe. The book's size is ideal for travel, keeping in your bag, or fitting nicely on the shelf. On to the content. Having learned about logical fallacies in a college course before I purchased this book, I understand that there are many a fallacy that didn't make the final cut. However, I also understand this book never intended to cover everything, It just aims to give a brief coherent summary of fallacies, which it does fairly well. However, on occasion the pictures don't help to clarify the passages, though it seems they are trying to. Also on occasion, It seems the length of the passage just doesn't do enough justice to the fallacy, and it may still be difficult to understand, even after the explanation and the picture. All in all, this book is high-quality and helpful for the Logical Noob and as a reminder to the Fallacy Veteran alike, would recommend.

This book overall is going to honestly be your best friend in the war on the internet if you are a scrub and don't know what you're doing or how to form rational thoughts. That's not to say that I am some master of something as arbitrary as internet arguments, but no joke this book will bolster your ability to spot and see through deception or just point out faulty logic in general.It's like a magazine in Fallout: New Vegas. No joke. You can look, see the page, see the error and see if it follows through with the erroneous belief presented.The illustrations are great. The examples are good. Like seriously, I have no faults for this book. If you want to get it as a gag gift for your friend who gets madder than heck on the internet because he's always losing, this might be the thing to help him. Unless you know, you don't want him trying to pull this level of effort on you. In which case, buy this book yourself AND COUNTER ARGUE HIM LIKE AN EPISODE OF YU GI OH WITH LOGIC AS YOUR DECK AND THE HEART OF THE CARDS JUST BEING YOUR HEART YO.

In this day and age, this subject is more relevant than ever. Errors in reasoning are all around us, flooding the news and infiltrating political discourse (to the extent it even exists anymore!). This cute little illustrated book presents flawed logic in a concise and approachable way. A must read for anyone wanting to navigate complex issues and the arguments surrounding them. Some of my favorites: Straw Man, Equivocation, False Dilemma, Appeal to irrelevant authority, Appeal to Fear, Slippery Slope. 20 Fallacies are presented in total, each with an illustration and an example. Enjoy!!

I found the logical fallacies here are no better explained than just reading the first paragraph of each fallacy's Wikipedia article. The value of this book to me is that it selects a few of the most popular ones (the Wikipedia "List of fallacies" article is quite long).The cartoons, although very well drawn, aren't very good at illustrating the logical fallacy they're meant to represent. Many of them feel like they were doodled randomly and it was up to the author to find a way to make them fit with the page's material.I feel like this book is a missed opportunity. With cutesy animal illustrations, simplified vocabulary, and more relevant examples, this could've been a great gift to give to a kid.

This is a good overview of a bunch of arguments we all make that really don't stand up to logical analysis. Though most of these are very obvious upon reading them, I think we all fall victim or, even worse, perpetrator, to these crimes. Sometimes, we even use them deliberately because we don't have the reasoning to back them up. I can see myself referring to this book frequently after I make arguments to see which of these crutches I might have used so I can reduce and eventually eliminate my usage of them.

This is a great book for older kids and adults. It is staying right on my coffee table. Everyone should read this book. The illustrations are wonderful and really help explain the concepts. Even my middle school child is starting to understand the different logical fallacies. This is an especially important concept to understand and learn about in today's information age, where you have to sort through so much information to figure out if it is true/logical or not. This book should be taught in every high school and college. The adults in my life (myself included) are also enjoying it, and learning from it. Love it.

I received my copy of Tongue Tied and devoured it in 2 days. I'm a pediatric Dental Hygienist who has been surrounded by practitioners in the Myofunctional realm, along with seeing many speakers like Derek Mahoney and Dr. Zaghi. It is refreshing to have an updated compilation of the collective information on all aspects of Tongue and lip ties. This book is ideal for people in the Dental Field, Pediatric Dentistry, General Dentistry, Speech and Language, occupational field and Pediatric Medical field. I personally had all the issues with my 3 sons as babies, feeding... colic, painful breastfeeding etc and nobody caught it until I finally was enlightened by Dr. Sami who I worked with. She identified my 3rd son's TT and LT. He was prescribed Proton Pump inhibitors as a newborn. When it was all tied to the restriction in his tongue. I am passionate about this field. I am thrilled to have the latest information to be able to share with people thanks to Dr. Baxter's book and work. Highly recommend this book to various practitioners to educate on the vast problems in the body that it can cause if left untreated.

I work as a medical interpreter here in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The book is wonderful! A myofascial therapist who is also a myofunctional therapist found that my wife had a severe tongue tie. For years I have taken my wife for chiropractic adjustments, massage, physical therapy, etc. Finally we found the reason for only slight and temporary relief! Unfortunately very few providers here fully understand this condition. So many of the narratives found in this book are spot on regarding how infrequently this condition is diagnosed and even less treated. It seems that unless one is personally affected or a loved one this condition remains a mystery. Thank you so much Dr Baxter and your associates for such an enlightening book!

This book provides a lot of knowledge for tongue tie, lip tie, buccal tie, and the possible symptoms of each. I consider this information very valuable for anyone to know. These restrictive ties seem to be something that was very well known in our past but that has also been forgotten. I appreciate the authors going into great detail about the ties and the symptoms relating to them. I also like how it is explained how the ties cause the symptoms. There are plenty of pictures for both before and after release of a tie. There is also some scientific evidence included which is great for any medical professionals looking to broaden their knowledge on this subject to benefit their patients. Because the symptoms of these ties can be caused by various different conditions, I truly suggest to anyone interested in these ties that they read this book to learn everything it has to offer. This book also shares important resources and techniques for finding further information and seeking a professional diagnosis.

I have a client that has tried several times to quit smoking but he always starts back. I found a great tip from this book to motivate him and both he and I are certain he has quit for good this time! The author has this exercise where he says take the cost of a pack of cigarettes and divide it by 20. He explains that that is the cost per cigarette and he says multiply how many you smoke per day by that cost. And he says if you quit that's your daily savings. Then he goes on to explain how to calculate your yearly savings. My client isn't as health conscious as he would like to be but he is super money conscious. Once we sat down and did this exercise together he realized how smoking was holding him back from being able to enjoy some of his favorite hobbies. He's going to take the money he saves from not smoking and buy season tickets to the Bears! I'm glad I found a book to help me help my client.

Steve Bivans' book "Vikings, War and the End of the Carolingians" isa scholarly translation of a rare thing: an original source on 9thcentury history. This is the Annal of St. Vaast, kept in the late800s by monks in a Frankish monastery, and a record of the decliningdays of the dynasty started by Charlemagne.In a very informative introduction, Bivans sets the stage, introducessome of the major characters, and puts the Annal in historical context.The translation itself is abundantly footnoted, and there's significantvalue added by the interpolation of identifying information whenevera character is named. So many of Charlemagne's descendants of thisera were named Charles that this is extremely useful for the modernreader to keep track of who's who. There are extensive appendicesas well. Beyond the bibliography, there are maps, genealogies, a glossary,a list of places mentioned.This is the first translation into English of this original sourcefor medieval history, and while I'm sure it will be useful to otherscholars, it is also a painless introduction for the serious studentof history who may not be acquainted with all the arguments on varioussides of the questions.

First, for transparency, I admit to being a history addict. I have been reading in that subject since grade school and have amassed an extensive personal library. From that background, I was well aware of the tradition of medieval chronicles but had not read them directly; I do not read medieval Latin, and have had to rely on translated extracts. Here, in Bivans' work, we have a translation, not of selected extracts, but of the full text of the Annals of St. Vaast, a compilation of 9th century summaries of significant events from the perspective of a monk at the St. Vaast monastery.The Vikings, of course, come off badly in the narrative, but the monk is equally critical of various Christian leaders for either their lack of dedication and persistence, or for their acceptance of compromise and paying Viking raiders off in order to avoid conflict. I found Bivans work to be a valuable addition to my understanding of early European politics, even if it was often tough slogging to keep mental track of the various Carolingian leaders, especially those of lesser prominence. A good read if you are interested in the formation of European aristocracy, but not for the casual reader.

For sure, Viking lore, but this book is no historical bore, prepare to be captivated, captured, and transported to your seat at the table of this incredible 9th century saga... A beautiful and moving novel, and an early contender for the best book of 2019. Chess brilliantly captures the inconsolable feeling of loss that suffuses the soul of any immigrant or refugee, with the twist here that the home thatâ€™s been lost forever is a parallel timeline in an alternate universe. A deeply emotional journey akin to â€œStation Elevenâ€, and a superb lens through which the everyday world is abruptly made foreign and wrong.

I've long believed that science-fiction, as a genre, is well-suited to reflecting the very real frustrations, concerns, and joys of our own lives, and this book serves as another piece of evidence for me. Unique and compelling, Chess' writing manages to convey the universal sensations of grief, of isolation, of otherness in an insightful, moving way. Hel, the protagonist, is just unlikable enough to be believable (What kind of monster doesn't tip?!), but I still found myself rooting for her to get her sh@! together and succeed. I found myself wanting to know more about the world Hel came from, and wishing there was a museum like the one she wants to create in our world so that I could visit it.

Beautiful writing and so much heart! I found it a bit hard to get into the first time, because I didn't much like Hel. But the further I read, the more I related to her. I realize now that were I in her shoes, I'd behave exactly as badly; probably worse! I love the parts that contrast the two New Yorks, the scenes set in Dwayne's grandma's house, and Hel's memories of her son. Let the empathy of this book inspire us to look at refugees with new eyes, and increased action!

In close to the present time, the world that is not our timeline is in shambles from war. A gateway opens, and by lottery, around 150,000 people move to our own timeline. The book, in amazingly detailed and carefully drawn writing, tells of the lives of those living in a reality subtly different than their own.Much of the book concerns Helen and Vikram, a couple that went through the gateway, as they find their way in the new to them world. There is discrimination against the "aliens", as their kind is called, and there are the many big and little differences between the worlds to navigate. Other characters get briefly highlighted also. One of these is a man who has a swastika tattoo---in his old reality, a peaceful symbol, another is a criminal whose crime paints all aliens in a bad light, and those and other stories add to the fullness of the writing.An overriding theme is the power of art. In the alternate world, an author named Ezra Sleight is hugely beloved. In our world, he died as a young boy. Vikram brought his most famous novel with him, and it becomes missing. In our world of overwhelming amounts of information, it was very interesting to consider the value of something like the novel that exists only in a single delicate physical form, and how we might value literature and art differently if that were the case in our own world.A highly recommended read.

I found it challenging to suspend my own disbelief in order to get into the story. I am not generally a fan of the genre. But K Chess writes so well, I found myself caring about some of the characters, and, well, I finished reading the book. Now that I know I liked it, I will have to read it again.

Famous Men Who Never Lived is a moving and deeply enlightening thought experiment. It is beautifully written-even lyrical-and a thoroughly rewarding read.

Imagine youâ€™re living your life in New York City when word comes that bomb attacks will soon bring killing levels of radiation. But there is a gateway from your New York into a parallel universeâ€™s New York and you are one of the people chosen to step through with as much as you can carry. About 150,000 people manage to make their escape, and our main characters, Helen (usually called Hel) and Vikram are among them.Normally in time/dimension travel novels the person doing the moving tries to blend in and not reveal that heâ€™s from another dimension. But in this book, everyone knows whatâ€™s happened, which provides a lot of possibilities for the story.The new arrivals are called UDPs (Universe Displaced Persons) or, more pejoratively, aliens. They are objects of fascination for some, but once the novelty of their arrival has worn off, more people are indifferent to them or have negative feelings about them. Thatâ€™s difficult for the UDPs, but more so is the adjustment from their world (called the Before) to the new one. It seems that the two New Yorks split somewhere around 1910, which means that despite their initial sameness, there are many differences, large and small, between their histories and development. The UDPs receive intensive orientation, but they canâ€™t just drop their memories of the Before, and the people and things theyâ€™ve lost causes great sorrow and pain.Vikramâ€™s favorite author from the Before is a man named Sleight, and Vikram has brought one of Sleightâ€™s novels, The Pyronauts, with him through the gateway. In the new world, Sleight died as a child, and his books were never written. A desire not to fully assimilate, but instead to keep the Before culture alive, spurs Helâ€™s ambition to create a UDP museum. At the same time, she has the notion that there is something about Sleight that caused the rift between the two New Yorks, and she and Vikram hope to find out what that is.I was immediately drawn in by the bookâ€™s premise, and Chessâ€™s point of view about dimensional travelers. I felt the UDPsâ€™ yearning, loss and displacement. And, of course, the position of the UDPs and how theyâ€™re treated has parallels to todayâ€™s immigrants. We see intriguing glimpses of the Before world, like neighborhoods that have different names and characters, usually because of the different placement and modes of transport. Twentieth-century history played out differently, which leads to some strong differences in the socio-cultural outlooks of the UDPs and the New Yorkers of their new home.But after setting all this up, it felt to me as if Chess couldnâ€™t unify her theme and she tried to do too much. The storyline is choppy because of having not just Hel and Vikram driving it, but also because Chess intersperses first-person narratives by other UDPs, as well as excerpts from The Pyronauts, all on top of references back to the Before and a bit of a mystery plot involving that copy of The Pyronauts. I didnâ€™t feel that the other narratives or the excerpts from The Pyronauts added much to the story, and those parts took attention away from Hel and Vikram, who could have used more pages to flesh out their characters and better engage emotionally with the reader. The mystery plot could have been interesting, but it was way in the background for much of the book, only to come back briefly at the end of the book, at which point I was tired of the slog and didnâ€™t much care anymore.This is a book that had great potential but ended up being all over the place.
