This book surveys the role of the Comanche in the western plains. The centerpiece of the narrative is the war Chief, Quanah, and his mother, Cynthia Ann Parker. But the story begins long before that.First, this is the chronicle of the Comanche. It really begins with the access to horses, scrawny but tough, coming from Spanish mounts. The Apache, the Comanche, and others adapted to the new resource and began using the horses for mobility, hunting, and warfare. The Comanche, according to the book, adopted them more thoroughly than other native Americans (including Apaches) for combat, learning to shoot their arrows while riding their mounts. Apache, for instance, would ride to the point of combat and then fight dismounted--a serious disadvantage against Comanche. Their tactics and their ferocity gave Comanches control over a huge range of land. Often allied with Kiowa, the Comanche established a bastion of strength, as the book details it (referring to it as Comancheria).Second, the narrative highlights the relationships between Europeans (Spanish, French, Americans, Texans) and the Comanche. The style of fighting by Spanish and later Mexican troops gave the advantage to the rapidly moving Comanches. The book explains this nicely. Later, as Texas became an independent country and later a state, Texans, too, did not handle Comanche well. Only as Texas Rangers became more mobile and armed with six shooters did they begin to have success.Third, this book is personalized, given a human element, by reference to Cynthia Ann Parker, who was part of a family attached by Comanches. Some were killed, some escaped, and some were captured. She was one of those captured. She later became a wide of a powerful war chief. One of her children was Quanah, who later became an important war chief among the Comanches. We learn of Comanche life, to some extent, by the life of Cynthia, the work that she carried out. Later, she was "rescued" when a polyglot force of soldiers, Rangers, and others attacked the camp where she was living. She was "freed" from her captivity, although she appears to have been pretty miserable for the rest of her life among Texans.After her death, the narrative follows her son's career. The book traces Quanah's life, from lonely orphan to brave to war chief. We also learn of those who tried to quell the Comanches, with the major figure here being the Civil War general (now much lower in rank), Ranald Mackenzie. We learn how the Americans began to turn the tide against the Comanches. We also learn, after the Americans triumphed, how Quanah was still able to have a major role to play among Comanches. He even gained a certain respect from Americans. An interesting comparison of his later life with that of Geronimo is instructive.

We live in Oklahoma - the middle of modern day Comanche County. My best friend growing up was the great-granddaughter of Chief Quannah Parker. She was even named after Cynthia Ann Parker. She has been my friend for over 60+ years. Therefore, I knew some of the history of the Comanche way of life, but from their side. I still cherish those memories of the stories told to me by her Grandmother (which was really her great-aunt, but called Grandmother by Comanche culture). She told of how afraid of the soldiers they were as children on the reservation near Fort Sill. I was a child hearing these stories, not really understanding... My family (white settlers) had settled in Oklahoma Territory from the Llano, Texas area before the turn of the century. They had lived thru the battles and loss of lives. Some went on to Arizona, but that's another story.EMPIRE OF THE SUMMER MOON really awakened some of those memories - but from both sides. It was a horrible time for the settlers and the Indians! I have read many books on the subject, but this was the BEST, most accurate account, from both sides. It gives true documentation of events as they happened. We have given this book to so many family members and friends. A few weeks ago, we gave it to a Comanche friend. He said he learned so much about his people from this book. We HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone wanting to know the true history of the west from both sides.

My only complaint about this book is redundancy. That said, I couldn't put this down. It invaded my thoughts and dreams. There is such a deep sadness about this chapter if American History and this book just crystallized the impossible situation.I live in the area of Texas and Oklahoma covered in the book. I have family papers used by relatives three generations ago to establish Indian connections for the purpose of personal gain. I have visited the forts and parks, missions, and roadside historical signs related to this time period. This book helped me put the pieces together.If you think one group is all bad and the other all good, you will hate this book. If you want to take a hard look at what happens when cultures clash, this book tackles the subject in a compelling and interesting way.

I normally get all books from the library, which is where I first got this one. In the past 15 years I have actually bought to keep in my small "library" 2 books--Carl Sagan's "The Demon Haunted World," & this one. Published in 2010, it is the only book I've ever found that tells the history of American expansion into the west without a strong bias toward whites, and with phenomenal documentation (nearly a quarter of the volume is a listing of citations).The fact that for over 40 years I've lived in the middle of the area primarily concerned makes it more personal to me, as well as that one of my grandmothers was born in "Indian Territory" (as Oklahoma was called at first), & my mother told of some of her childhood memories of meeting Indians in her home town as a young girl, all add to my own interest. But the main attraction is the unbiased telling of the story, "no punches pulled." The author doesn't shy away from the details of the brutallity on both sides, so it can be disturbing at times; but it also shows the admirable aspects of both sides.There is no question that Quanah was a truly great leader, but you'll have to read the whole story to understand just how great.

One of my favorite books this year and an interesting account of an often forgotten person. I read the novel just before my trip to Palo Duro Canyon State Park near Canyon, Texas. History came alive as I relived the battles while hiking along the canyon and visiting the highly acclaimed Panhandle-Plains Museum in Canyon, Texas. Quanah Parker is an interesting, complex historical figure whose journey from feared Comanche warrior to respected politician is very well presented here.

I've never read a voice like this--not because of the style, though. Yes, the writing is good and beautiful in parts, but if Hemingway really did say that Markham was a better writer than he, I disagree. For me, the complex long sentences tripped over their own feet at times, overextending metaphor where Hemingway's simplicity would have done better. No--it was the workings of Markham's mind, her philosophy and decision process, that I found truly incredible.Paula McClain's book Circling the Sun is a fictional memoir of Beryl Markham, and West with the Night is her actual memoir. I wondered at first why McClain would choose Markham of all people to fictionalize, when Markham had already spoken for herself in this memoir. I was almost irritated. After all, Markham is dead. She can't speak up and say, "that's not how it happened. Read the book I ALREADY WROTE if you want to know." Now that I've finished West with the Night, I understand why Mcclain wanted to write Circling the Sun.Markham writes about how she came to hunt with the Masai tribe as a child in Africa, and how she came to love and train horses (when there were no other women doing it), and how she came to fly planes (when hardly anyone, let alone women, was doing it), but she dwells not at all on her personal relationships or feelings, which for the curious reader should provide context and explanation of Markham's unusual talent and viewpoint.She writes more about the moody, wise, indifferent nature of Africa than she writes about her own feelings. We have no idea, for instance, what it felt like when her mother left Markham and her father to return to England when Markham was four years old. You don't even know from West with the Night that Markham's father practically forced her into marrying an older man at the age of 17 because her father was moving and didn't know what else to do with her. These events undoubtedly shaped Markham's courage and ambition, but West with the Night doesn't tell us how.West with the Night is the end result of some strange fomentation within the person of Markham. She writes without arrogance and with plenty of humor about all of her 'firsts.' To Markham, they were simply good ideas. She cared nothing for, or even seemed to think about at all, what other people thought of her. She moved in circles that other women never entered, and was treated as one of the boys. In making life decisions, like the decision to move to Britain, for instance, she was pointed solely by the needle of her own compass. She was happy flying and scouting game in Africa, but wondered what she might be missing. So she moved. Apparently, men followed her. I admit to my morbid curiosity on this point, and I may read Circling the Sun for McClain's take on the other parts of Markham's life.On the other hand, I may not read it. Markham's critics accuse her of not writing her own memoir (it's too good, they say, to be written by her), and of being a home-wrecker. Her critics look for opportunities to criticize her, for of course she is too unbelievable to escape jealousy. Our curiosity about Markham's personal life shares also this unbelieving desire to justify, to show how the rest of us may have gotten from Point A to Markham's Point Z if only we'd been born into similar circumstances. Really, all you need to know is that she did these things, in spite of fear, and did them well. She was luminous and rare. You can sit back and be inspired by her story without having to justify, explain, or otherwise take away from its magnificence by delving into a personal life she preferred to leave private.

West With the Night is a marvelous auto biography of Markham's time in Africa. She was raised on a farm by her father who bred race horses, and became quite an accomplished trainer and horsewoman herself. Since the road system was deplorable or non-existent in the 1930's, small planes delivered the mail and other essentials, and she trained to be a pilot. She conducted groups of hunters on safari, helping them to locate big game, especially elephants which were difficult to locate in the vast areas of Africa.Her crowning achievement was a solo flight from Europe to Newfoundland, 3600 miles, 2000 of it unbroken ocean, in a small plane with no radio and no electronic guidance systems. She had to let the engine die to ensure that she had completely consumed the fuel in a tank before switching to another tank and restarting the engine! It was an astonishing accomplishment for any pilot, and the first time for a woman to make such a solo flight. She writes with such intensity of the details of the 1936 flight that you feel like you're in the plane with her, gripped with the suspense and surrounded by the black night.Markham's writing is beautiful and at times poetic, especially when she describes the landscape and inhabitants of Africa. She lived in the wonderful era described so gorgeously in "Out of Africa", and even knew some of the people described in that book. She lived another 50 years after this magnificent feat, and I wish she had been convinced to continue writing.

Neither had Ms. Markham until one day, there she was, a British child--an only child--in the highlands of Kenya, her feet at the starting line of becoming the amazing woman she would become. To read this is similar to watching a time-lapse photographic record of an exotic flower bursting into bloom--all the more fascinating because the subject isn't a simple flower but a human being. By doing, one becomes!The story culminates in an epic, trans-Atlantic flight, but along the way it reads like a marvelous bed-time story--the kind that the Aesop's Fables author might have written if he had lived in Africa, observing human and animal nature in an era that feels farther removed from today than a mere century should seem.I enjoyed three things about this book: the beautiful language with which it is written, the observations of a world I will never see, and the affirmation that yes, it is possible to become all that one might be if only one takes that first step and then the next and the next.

Used this book for a lesson about clouds and rain in my kindergarten-age daughterâ€™s class then donated it to her classroomâ€™s library. Simple to read and understand book with great pictures.

I was expecting much more factual information including types of clouds. My daughter likes the pictures, but I was disappointed.

My mom who is 81 years old loves weather so I bought her this book for Christmas. I know it is a children's book, but she has really enjoyed learning about the clouds.

Just what I expected. Nice.

this is outstanding 2018 explanatory tax data and includes many forms for filing purposes. since IRS closed and now re-opened obtaining forms via mail (I have no printer capability) was "iffy"!

The first 117 pages are the 1040 instructions booklet you might find at your local library. Then, as the first page, as shown on the Amazon web-site lets you see, are a list of all the forms that appear after the 117 pages of instructions.(and e.g., the form 1040-ES, and its instructions, are the ones available on 12/10/18. That is, for tax year 2017; because the form 1040-ES for 2018 isn't available till after January 2019)
