The negative person who gave this one star is complaining about service relating to receipt of the item. They have never even seen it. I have the book and its wonderful. The pieces are just beautiful. I sang a couple with my daughter on various occasions and they are just wonderful. The piano accompaniment is very well done, not horribly difficult, but full sounding. The book was recommended to me by my vocal coach who has sung all over the world. I thought that a pretty good recommendation.

LOVE this book. I had been looking for a feminist book that opened my eyes about patriarchy and the effects that it had on society and the themes that played out in male/female interactions because of it..and this book is it! The Gender Knot is extremely informative (my book is mostly highlighted because of it..defeats the purpose of highlighting, I know) and extremely up-to-date in terms of how we need to understand and address patriarchy (systems over blaming the individual). I'm about half way through, so I'll update this post once I'm finished (if I can remember), but if any of this interests you, I definitely recommend that you buy this book!!
As a minister I've been looking for a single book that explains well the patriarchal disfunctional society in which we find ourselves. As the author points out, we are so immersed in patriarchy that we don't recognize when we are unconscious participants in it. I find much in this book that is useful in working with groups and my church in turning away from patriarchy and making our small part of the world a better more open and equal place for everyone. Gotta start somewhere!
This book gave me the tools to address how sexism and patriarchy affected my own upbringing, and recognize how it has continued to affect me. It's also given me the tools to talk to other men about it and be a strong ally to women. Johnson repeatedly focuses in on an *institution* being the core of the problem, without losing sight of responsibility of individuals to try to change that institution by avoiding the paths of least resistance that reinforce it. Johnson understands that the existence of patriarchy is only the fault of men if they choose to do nothing about it. This book is a must-have for everyone, particularly men, who are interested in understanding feminism and gender.
This is a great book to help explain the hows and whys of patriarchy and its implications to both men and women from a male perspective. It's clear, concise, and straightforward approach neither blames nor apologizes but instead examines the issues and then continues forward to propose simple methods for combating the problems facing our nation and all human beings in it.
When I bought this book I read - like I always do - the low ratings...I was a bit concerned when I read two people claiming that this guy *hates men* but I bought the book anyways. I got a great deal. NOw, I seriously wonder how those reviews came to pass since this author's writing shows such a deep underlying compassion for humans in the text.This is a great book. It is the kind of book you want as madatory reading in social studies in school. Yes, it is a bit repetetive (especially if you are not reading your first book in this area) but never really redundant. but it gives you deep insights not just in the system but it sheds light on issues almost every heterosexual couple seems to be struggling with on some front. and it doesn't do what most book about couple's issues these days suggest (which is baiscally for the lady to either *make* him see the light or walk) it rats out the real culprit without blaming one side but at the same time squary placing the responsibilty for change on the side which benefits most from tha system.not a small feat IMO.At some point, if you are woman, you will get angry as a number of your suspicions get confirmed. YOu will become angry as you see your father and husband colluding to keep you in your place. BUt you will also be able to see past that behaviour wnd not truly BLAME them for it.If you are a man, I suppose this isn't a comfortable read either. BUt while Mr. Johnson is telling you to change he manages to never blame you for teh history.I was really amazed by his *proposition* on how we need to adress the issue. He gives a couple of very specific suggestions on what to do. He assures us that the big leaps come over generations and that they are coming. But in teh end he dares us to REALLY look. To see what this system is, how it objectivies humans and devalues your mothers, wifes, sisters and friends and he dares you to see and NOT change, because That is what you will do, once you have seen how this works
a must read for all the people, women, walking around, spouting off about 'patriarchy' and having no real idea what this is, what it means and how comprehensive it is. READ THIS!! I am doing it on Audible. The narrator is slow so spend it up a touch. :)

Disclaimer: I am a huge fan of Larry Brooks and his writing approach. Therefore, I'm predisposed to liking his writing books. But this effort withstands the extra scrutiny of trying to find fault with it just to prove I'm not biased toward his writing.Brooks' theories are controversial because of his adherence to a philosophy of writing that emphasizes story structure as the foundation of "good writing." What often gets overlooked is that he focuses almost entirely on fiction intended to be commercially successful and story-driven (i.e. genre fiction) as opposed to "literary fiction," which is primarily character driven. However, he claims that any good, well-told story will have as its base a solid structural foundation.The big reason for my rating of this book is his clarity of thought, organization, and giving writers concrete, practical, doable suggestions, guidelines, and specific weak points to work on when writing or revising fiction. This book is particularly useful for writers who have completed at least a first draft and want to improve their story with subsequent drafts.His concepts are not easy to master, and he doesn't promise quick fixes to flawed manuscripts. Particularly beneficial are his use of metaphor and real world examples to communicate ideas such as concept, premise, theme, and dramatic arc. Also useful are his case studies and deconstruction of popular and bestselling novels to show proper story structure (in the latter) and flawed story structure in many of his case studies.Any writers whose fiction manuscript has been rejected time and time again by agents, editors, or publishers; or independent writers who published a book that either didn't sell well or received poor reviews owe it to themselves to read Story Fix. I suggest reading his previous works first: "Story Engineering" and "Story Physics" for background on his writing philosophy so that this book will be easier to understand.Brooks' writing books have earned a permanent place in my reference library. And by the way, he's a darn good fiction writer too. Check out "Bait and Switch" and "Deadly Faux" to see what I mean.
So, if you haven't read Story Engineering you need to start there first.This book should be read AFTER Story Engineering and Story Physics: Harnessing the Underlying Forces of Storytelling because without those other books under your belt, you'll spend too much time trying to figure out all the terms.I love Story Engineering and just re-read it for the fourth time about a week ago.I gave this book four, instead of five stars, for a couple reasons:One: too much of the book is spent defending story planning and explaining how pantsters and organic story tellers still need to meet the expectations for the genre they are in (to be commercially viable at least). If someone is reading this book they'd better already know this stuff, I mean, what organic story teller that doesn't believe in the same theories as Brooks is going to be reading this book? It's basically the third in a series of books...I don't know.Two: The best part of the book (in my opinion) was where Brooks gave examples of his critiquing process. It was too short. These examples were very helpful and original to the book (where much of the book was reiterating stuff from the previous two) so I believe they should have been exploited more. Just a thought.Anyway, if you're a fan of Brooks you're going to buy this anyway, if you're not yet a fan, trust me that you'll be happy if you read him, but you've got to start at Story Engineering.Finally...the last example he gave of a book critique was pretty cool, it would have been nice (or will be cool if it's added later) for him to give the author's name (and maybe working title) so readers could check out the book (I'm assuming it'll be out sometime....) so we could see what the writer did with the information.Maybe in a future edition there will be a link and some more commentary about how Larry's advice was used, not used, etc.Cheers.
I'm pretty sure most people will agree that Larry Brooks is kind of a genius when it comes to understanding what makes books tick. His plotting advice might be the best you'll find anywhere.Unfortunately, he's not a great writer. Not in this book, anyway.I bought this after years & years of devouring his website posts, and watching (and re-watching) his Writers Digest courses. I'm a major fan of his work and concepts.But this book... it was a snooze. Even as someone familiar with Brooks' basic concepts, I just couldn't get past the first few pages.So, I tried skipping ahead to chapters I was sure I'd like.They weren't any easier to read.It's not like I'm expecting the hilarity of Chuck Wendig, or the concise explanations of Rayne Hall. But really, Larry, this book needs more life... more upbeat energy. And less repetition. (Think: more entertaining, less textbook-ish writing.)I'll keep a fairly dense, small-print, text-heavy book - "The Secrets of Story" by Matt Bird is one of them - IF it delivers fresh insights that get me excited about writing.This one is on its way to Goodwill. I'm happy to buy Brooks' books so he can keep sharing great insights at his website and in audio/video courses.But this book... it was a snooze.
