When Gabriel Finley turns 12, he and his friends, along with a very special young raven named, Palidin, go on a rescue mission to save Gabriel's father who's been missing for several years. Once Gabriel learns the clues to his missing father's whereabouts from a mysterious writing desk, things get very interesting for young Gabriel and his little troop. Gabriel encounters mysterious birds called, Valravens who aren't normal ravens at all and can't say a good riddle to save their lives. Gabriel has been well versed in riddles since he was a small child and now he knows why. You have to separate the good ravens from the bad by a good riddle-and the valravens are after Gabriel and Paladin and they are very bad birds.Gabriel Finley And The Raven's Riddle is full of good guys and bad guys. It takes a lot of courage to rise up to a challenge and the group summons it with the help of a strange man named Septimus and his old raven friend. They must take a journey to a strange and dangerous place to save Mr. Finley from the grips of a dastardly character whose greed and deviousness are legendary.This is a great book for middle grade readers and a liking of riddles is a plus since the book is full of clever quips, riddles and puns. Kids will love the twists and turns and will find a hero in Gabriel and his likeable friends who include a violin playing, over parented girl named Pamela, an oddball named, Abby, and a bully, Somes. There is a lot of imagination wrapped up in this fun story which leads the kids from their homes to Brooklyn down to a strange and sinister place that one must enter through the graveyard. This is a great fall read. I enjoyed reading about Gabriel Finley a lot and I think that kids will love this fun, adventurous story.

I wanted to love this book - Ravens and Riddles! Marvellous! I bought it having read and enjoyed p.1 online, and started with high hopes. Despite an iffy premise (see below), which I managed to lay aside, I found the first few chapters compelling. Here, we alternate between the story of Paladin the baby raven, who will turn out to be the hero Gabrielâ€™s Amicus (aka familar), and main character Gabriel. Over all, Paladin was my favorite character: I cared about him and his survival.But as Gabrielâ€™s story took over, Paladin got lost behind other characters who were far less interesting or endearing, with whom I felt little connection besides quirky Abby (whose quirks however are mostly characterized by her wearing ill-matching clothes, rather than having greater significance). From there, it went downhill. The parallels with certain Potter tricks became a little too obvious; for me, in two main respects: 1. a writing desk that walks and talks, and shows moving pictures wherein Gabriel can see the past (sound familiar?); and 2. Gabrielâ€™s clutch of plucky friends (though he has one more gal pal than HP). But where Rowling manages the interplay between her characters so brilliantly, and all have depth and development, none of these, including the hero, really change from start to finish. One character who does change is minor player Aunt Trudy, who starts out being the mean cow from hell, but at the end, out of the blue, is inexplicably jollying around the kitchen.Back to that initial premise, which explains how the evil valravens came into existence. (Itâ€™s on p. 3, so hardly a spoiler). It goes something like this: Ravens have always been paired with beloved humans, and one day, one faithful raven loses his â€œmasterâ€ in battle. In his sorrow, this raven is somehow tempted by a mysterious phantom-like bird to attain immortality by eating his masterâ€™s flesh, thereby breaking the raven/man bond and - ta-da - valravens are born. Thereâ€™s no explanation as to whatâ€™s in it for evil phantom bird to have valravens exist, but far more pertinent, why, when the raven was mourning his master, would he at that moment crave immortality? â€œIâ€™m so heartbroken, I want to live foreverâ€â€¦.? So these were 2 major motivations that could have been interesting and added depth, but were totally missing.Over all: story line okay, and probably works for middle grade readers, as might the riddle aspect (which I still love the idea of). But for me, the more I read, the harder it became to go back to it. The writing, having started out well, deteriorated, and too much shifting POV took my focus. Had the characters compelled, I could have overlooked the writing more; had the writing compelled, I could have overlooked the lack of characterization more. But as well as a good story line, I want insight into, and from, the characters and their motivations (yes, even in middle grade!) and this just didnâ€™t deliver.3 stars because of the bits I did like (raven lore, Paladin), and to give benefit of my adult doubt, because the book is probably better for kids than for me.

This book seems to really speak to kids, especially boys. This is typical of the notes I've seen: "[My son] read the book and really enjoyed it. It's rare that he ever has anything positive to say about a book so it must be really good." So, to the adult reviewers here who acknowledge that the book wasn't really targeted for their age group but wanted to review it anyway, let me just suggest this: give it to a kid between the ages of 7 and 12 and see what he or she says. My guess is that he or she will love it.(Disclosure: I am a biased but honest reviewer -- I've seen the dozens of notes from kids and they're amazing.)

I love this book, fascinating characters and a great inventive story. I love riddles!

Did this author actually make these hikes? If so, did the author know how to use their equipment and observation to detail the hike? It seems to me something was lacking. More than a few of the hikes are dead wrong even the starting points at times are non-existent. We asked a ranger about one and he said they had never had a parking lot where the book indicated. On at least one hike you need to cross a bridge with no shoulder with a 55MPH speed limit. This was no mentioned in the book. It was an uncomfortable crossing.

The book is excellent for getting you to and around many good hikes in Maryland. It is an excellent resource for those of us you love the outdoors but live near the B-W corridor.

Mr. Adkins' hiking books (all of them, not simply this one) are painstakingly researched and detailed. I've utilized them for 10+ years during weekend adventures around the greater Washington DC area. Nary do I go on a hike without bringing a photocopied map/synopsis of that hike from his book. I HIGHLY recommend purchasing his books if you're looking for a hiking guide in Maryland, Virginia, or elsewhere. Thank you Mr. Adkins for your contribution to the Great Outdoors!Happy Trails,

I have had this book for a couple of years and I and my family have done close to 40 of the hikes all over the state. I'm not sure what book the previous reviewer was using, but I have found 50 Hikes in Maryland to be a great resource and very accurate. Never have we ever become lost or confused while on any of the hikes and have even found the directions to the trailheads to be easy to use and always leading us perfectly to the beginnings of the hikes. Sorry that the other reviewer had such bad a experience; mine has always been positive. In fact, I've enjoyed this author's work so much that I have purchased his 50 Hikes in West Virginia.

I bought this as a beginner hiker. It's great and easy to read and follow. It has hikes for all levels, from 1-2 hour hikes to camping overnight. This is a great book to have if you enjoy the outdoors and live in or around maryland.

I live in neighboring wv and am happy to finally see a good guide to MD. I travel there often and was becoming frustrated about not being able to find good hiking information. This book is it--better than any other I've used and full of wonderful background information on the places it directs you to. Hikes range from easy jaunts suitable for families with children to some good overnighters.
