Great book with great advice. We used this and another book to guide our travels through the Dominican. We used both because at any given time both had current and outdated information (such is the Dominican). Overall the maps were a problem since the DR is rapidly developing its roadway systems. At any point at least one to all 4 maps we were using (two from the DR) were completely useless and outdated.This book had AMAZING recommendations. I fell in love with so many of the places recommended by this book. We actually changed our plans to stay longer at these places.

As a former Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV) going to the 50th anniversary celebrations in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, I wanted to have a guidebook that I could trust ... and this is a good one! I was a PCV from '62-'64, so i knew things had changed a lot ... even though I had been back in '74 and '07 for short visits. The country has changed so much. However, with this book in my backpack I was able to successfully negotiate Santo Domingo, and to travel by bus to Santiago and Jarabacoa, selecting hotels, restaurants, things and places to see. Highly recommended.

I can't speak to the other sections, but I found the Santo Domingo segment really useful for cultural and political history. In particular, it provided a thorough and efficient walking tour: we were able to use it, modifying it slightly (taking out/adding) to fit our interests. And if you're good walkers and start early, you can do it in a day.My one major gripe: a significant error. They mention that Diego de Velázquez who lived in Santo Domingo was the Spanish painter. This is not true: the painter never reached the colonies. Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar was an important conquistador on La Española and Mexico, and governor of Cuba, and must be the person whom they cite. This basic, although somewhat understandable, error really needs to be fixed to make this a completely well-informed guide, because it makes me wonder what other errors there were that I might've missed.

This is an awesome companion for the traveler who desires to venture away from the all-inclusive resorts and fully experience the DR in its entirety. The book pulls you in by introducing the reader to the country's rich history and from there builds describing the colorful culture, and music. This travel guide fully details the geographical highlights as well as many local spots of interest that are not to be missed. Particularly, its travel notes on La Samana introduced me not only to the many beautiful pristine beaches that have yet to be developed but also a national park which showcased the country's natural wildlife and artifacts of its indigenous people. I highly recommend this for the reader who wishes for something more than the generic tour book.

This is an excellent travel book; this will help you with all aspects of a Dominincan vacation if you want to see the country from a broader perspective. It gives you clear instructions for transportation and accommodations which are comfortable and reasonably priced. You will see the most charming places in the DR. With this book you can really make a special vacation. Please do learn a little Spanish....just a few words will show you are trying to communicate and are interested. (An experienced travellor in the DR).

The guidebook is well-written, well-organized, and offers an insider's view of the Dominican Republic. The restaurant recommendations in Santo Domingo were great, and the book offered great advice and insight for the areas we visited on the Island (Samana peninsula are-- Las Terrenas and Las Galeras). It was easy to navigate and the book offered a great history section, frequently used phrases, and tons of useful information. Highly recommend this guidebook. We used it for a trip in December 2013 and it was very much up to date.

We went to the DR to spend a week mostly diving, but also visiting. We rented a car and the first thing I noted is that the guide has no maps. I was frustrated. Then the infromation on diving schools and diving spots is really poor. I do not recommend this guide.

Awesome. As with any travel guide, it can't tell you everything. Concise 3-page history of the country. Contains many reference sections (i.e., glossary, index, cities, etc.). Good if you want to visit the DR in a way that is respectful of the people while being gritty and authentic.

I am a huge Eric Carle fan. My youngest son's nursery is a Very Hungry Caterpillar theme and we recently did his 1st birthday with the same theme. I ordered this book to sit out. It looked great as a decoration; however, I was disappointed by the story. There is no story, it is just a bunch of phrases thrown together. The pictures are just what you expect from Eric Carle so I was happy with those. I think if I had not been expecting some sort of a cutesy little story like The Very Hungry Caterpillar then I would have been happier with the book. Definitely not what I expected though.

My five-year-old twins LOVE books (something that makes this bibliophile ecstatic!) and I'm always looking for cute new books they would like to read. I saw this one just before Valentine's Day and thought it would be a cute book to read on Valentine's Day. I also ordered one for our nine-month-old nephew and our four-year-old nephew because lots of kids have read and enjoyed The Very Hungry Caterpillar!Love from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a book written by Eric Carle, who wrote The Very Hungry Caterpillar, a book many parents will recognize. This book welcomes back that same caterpillar to tell children about love. This hardcover book is the size of a gift book, measuring 5 3/4 inches by 7 inches and has glossy paperback pages.I was excited to receive this book for my kids but we were honestly disappointed with it. Based on the recommended age range for this book (3-5 years), this book should be good for them but it seems to be written for a much younger audience. Each set of pages only has a few words, along with the same types of pictures as in the original Very Hungry Caterpillar book and it only took us about a minute to read through it. The message behind the book is definitely cute but I think kids older than three would be more likely to become bored with it. We've only read it once and my kids haven't asked to read it again.I think this is a cute book but it is marketed at an older audience than it should be. If the publisher were to print this as a board book instead, I think this would be a great book for babies and toddlers because of the more durable pages. Had we known more about the actual content, I wouldn't have purchased it for ourselves but we will keep it anyway and possibly give it to friends with younger kids.

Even though we built quite a collection of children's books during the seven years I spent babysitting our three grandsons, it's always a delight to discover another to add. This one brought back memories of carefree summer days as a child, how exciting it was to find a caterpillar outside, to feel that little tickley sensation as it would move up my arm, and being amazed when my mother told me it would one day become a butterfly! I'm so pleased with this little board book that uses the life stages of a butterfly - from egg to caterpillar to cocoon to butterfly - to teach counting, colors, days of the week, foods (not to mention a recipe for a stomach ache!) - very sturdily constructed, brightly illustrated, and at 7" x 5" and a hair less than an inch thick, it'll fit perfectly into the chubby little hands of our two year old little guy on his birthday!The different sized pages in the middle of the book (after the caterpillar pops out of his egg on Sunday morning) showing different foods with holes punched in the centers to indicate where he's nibbled through them are darling - each page is thick enough that I think I'm going to cut a caterpillar-sized piece of green pipecleaner to give him so he can watch his very own caterpillar making its way through the one red apple he eats on Monday, two green pears on Tuesday, three purple plums on Wednesday, four red strawberries on Thursday, five bright orange oranges on Friday, and then the variety of multi-colored foods (probably not a caterpillar's scientifically accurate diet, but fun!) he eats on Saturday that leads to his stomache ache - chocolate cake, ice cream cone, pickle, Swiss cheese, salami, lollipop, cherry pie, sausage, cupcake and watermelon - goodness gracious!On Sunday, he limits himself to one green leaf, builds his "small house, called a cocoon, around himself", stays in there for over two weeks before he emerges as a multi-colored butterfly, whose wingspan takes up the final two pages! Though we probably won't expect our grandson to comprehend the scientific term of metamorphosis, he'll certainly grasp that the caterpillar's transformation is magical - a pretty good description of the book itself!

As a kindergarten teacher, it's impossible not to be a fan of all things Eric Carle. From his artwork, to his beautiful, accessible text, each book is truly a treasure. The latest from the Hungry Caterpillar is no exception! This is a perfect gift for any young reader... for Valentine's Day or any other occasion that you want them to know they are loved. (that would be every day!) Also very appropriate for a child to give to a teacher or other special adult in their lives... a beautiful expression of love. Thank you, Mr. Carle, for yet another gem to add to my collection.

I love The Very Hungry Caterpillar and so does my son. I got this one for him for Valentine’s Day. The story is simple and the illustrations are lovely (I took a few pictures to give you an idea). I love this cute, little book and you will too.

And since then, I’ve had to find other books that connect God and Holiness and Holiness and Healing and Healing and Humility and Humility and Grace and Grace and God. This book of Lucado’s was the beginning of a much needed spiritual makeover. Even if you’re reading something else already, your heart will thank you. If you apply what you’re reading and let it really sink in, everybody else in your life will thank you, too.

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME ~ Max Lucado wins again.It is fitting right in with 2 Bible studies that I am doing right now.Max hits everything right on point and it is an easy and fun read.There are also 12 tiny 4-page chapters in the back of the book. They are a personal daily Bible study or group study. It is a short "Grace reading", followed by scripture readings and questions/comments, followed by "ASK" which are questions that make you go back into the book and re-read.Surprise! I did not know these little study chapters were here until just now, as I just finished reading the book part this evening.I will indeed be purchasing a few more of these for family members and friends. I was going to SHARE this book, but now I find that I want to mark it up with the wealth of information that is in it.Learning made easy by Max Lucado once again. That's GRACE!

Am doing a bible study using this book (and the participants guide). I have been so blessed and have grown tremendously as a result. I find I can relate to teaching when the author helps me to picture the concept. Max Lucado is great at this. Would highly recommend this book for both beginning Christians as well as those walking in the Lord for awhile. You can never know enough about God’s grace.

Max Lucado has the gift of writing unimaginable truths in a way that those truths may be grasped. He has a down-home way of writing elegant truths from God's Word. He is very careful to stay within scripture, but is never afraid to tackle religion, those man-made laws that aren't helping anyone get closer to Christ. I never come away from reading one of his books without serious thoughts and new ideas working their way into my head. Thanks Mr Lucado!

I found the book, GRACE, by Max Lucado to be a quickly liberating book. Picking it up at a time I was wallowing in a lot of shame and guilt, Lucado presented the grace message in simplicity, which cut to the heart of salvation and forgiveness. I also normally like his writing and turn of phrase.However, I have to concur with another reviewer noted, and it's why I rated the book 4 stars instead of 5. Sometimes what can be considered a smart turn of phrase can also diminish the importance of the message because it changes the tone from reverent to glib. Since I have a strong spiritual grounding, that kind of thing didn't diminish the message I needed to receive when reading this book, but it could give a wrong impression to a newly converted Christian. As a writer, myself, I came to realize that I'm not writing to entertain or have someone think my phrasing is cleverly delivered, but rather to represent the Lord Jesus Christ. So there are times we have to set aside what or how we'd like to say something in favor of speaking for the One we represent.
