Having lots of fun with this...it isn't meant to be read cover to cover (it's more like a dictionary/encyclopedia) but you can, and I am. Lots of interesting facts and background on all the different things in the book and how they relate to the book/movie series. The next time you see the "Boogyman" ask him about his cousin the Boggart who just may be hiding in your closet if you've been unkind to their friend the Brownie.

Not Rowling, so don't expect it. A good compendium of myths, legends and fables from around the globe. Wonder where Rowling got some of the terrifying and bizarre creatures in the Harry Potter series? Here is the bases for some of these creatures.

Not what I expected, it's basically a dictionary of magical terms and ideas. Most of it is only peripherally related to the Harry Potter series.

I bought this for my grandson (10 years old) who is really into Harry Potter. He has read it twice and loves the content.

While this book does offer a lot of good source material on subjects touched upon in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potters novels (one through four, at the time this book was written), it is by no means an indispensable addition to the Pottermaniac's personal library. The references to events and personages in the Harry Potter books are rather haphazard, and in many cases it is apparent that the Potter link is primarily a gimmick designed to sell more books. This is not necessarily a bad thing, though, because there is information in this book I had not encountered elsewhere, and it does reinforce one's impressive appraisal of the fiber of actual legendry that went into the creation of Rowling's novels.This book offers a concise encyclopedia of magical subjects, creatures, and legends. Much of the material will be familiar to anyone well-read, yet there are aspects to some of even the most familiar of legends, such as that of the werewolf or vampire, that I was unaware of; this consisted for the most part of the different ideas held by different cultures. What was evil to a European of the Middle Ages was sometimes a portent of good to an inhabitant of China or India, for example. Perhaps the most interesting items discussed in these pages are the more obscure legends of unfamiliar beings which I had never heard of before and which I had assumed J.K. Rowling had invented: e.g., grundylows, kappas, and redcaps.The authors, a professional magician and his academic daughter, have written a book that can easily be read by laymen in the ways of magic. The concise, far from elaborate discussions of each topic can be easily understood by young readers obsessed with Harry Potter, making it a welcome, interesting, entertainingly informative read that does not so much add to the legendry created by J.K. Rowling as it does highlight the sturdiness of the foundation upon which her magical adventure stories are built.

Fulfilling and more than adequate compendium to conjure up and dissect the complex HP world. Sorely needs an update to complementthe subsequent volumes.

Really neat book that sort of answers your questions about what certain things are in the HP world according to JK Rowling and a little bit of real world history related to Magic.

It wasn't quite what I thought it was. However, that's my problem as I probably misread the ad. Nice book though.

This is a really interesting read. I loved reading the words of Abigail Adams who is an absolute beast. She clearly states her opinion on slavery (against) and female rights (for). And the love and respect between Abigail and John comes through crystal clear.This is a book that is for sure worth reading. But because of the fear that the post wouldn't get to them safely, there isn't as much written about his thoughts about the Continental Congress as I believed there would be. This made it a bit dry because a lot of the letters were very similar (family life, complaints about distance, etc). So eventually I did get a bit bogged down in the letters.This is a worth while read, but it is a slow read.

I have fallen deep into admiration for Abigail Adams, and even her crusty husband John shines as an honest man and devoted Revolutionary when England started taxing and over-controlling the feisty American Colonies. So far as I can tell, the book was assembled from their letters by a grandson, so is well over 100 years old now. I have found other correspondence that makes a more comprehensive picture of these important people. I have never been a lover of or reader of history, but the biography I am now reading about Abigail has my full attention. And it started with reading these letters. It was a bit difficult to start, 12 letters from John to Abigail, but once her letters begin to John, it gets very intense and interesting. The Revolutionary War period is well known for having a large group of extraordinary men, but the women who stayed behind to care for the families were no less able and amazing people. Or at least with John & Abigail Adams it is true. She offered wise and sage advice, and their deep affection for each other shines through their letters. Just amazing Americans!

You have to have a committed interest in the Adams' relationship or need the book for research to stay with the book, I am interested, however not enough to give it time. Readers will understand the incredible formality of their time through reading. The formality is historical fact however it makes a modern reader tired.

Great book. Have learned so much about the founding of America and what really went on behind the scenes. Have a great respect and admiration for Abigail Adams. If George Washington was the father of our country, Abigail Adams should be called the mother of our country.

This book cannot be reviewed as one would an account of history written many years later. The authors are Mr. and Mrs. Adams themselves. This is a rare opportunity to experience life during the Revolutionary War from the unique perspective of John Adams who has the benefit of intelligence about the newly forming government and Abigail Adams who is at home tending to home and hearth but at the same time, is a well informed, active and respected member of the citizenry living dangerously close to the site of several battles and skirmishes.These two extremely well educated and articulate people give an informed and often enlightened view of the day-to-day concerns of the colonies and the thought processes of those who were significant in creating the structure of the nation we inherited. The couple make many references to the fact that they are aware of possible interception of their letters and they mention that they must be careful what they say. Still, the fact that these letters were written as communication between a married couple and were not intended for public consumption adds to their authentic feeling.Mrs. Adams thoughts about how women should be given more rights in the new Constitution along with the brief discussion about slavery in the colonies were each quickly dismissed as having been issues that would allow for the ratification of the document. The rights of women led to slightly more consideration by each of them than the rights of slaves, it seemed to me.It is amazing that so many of these letters survived and I feel privileged to have access to them. Every one offered a look into life as it was led more than 240 years ago.

ENDLESSLY INTERESTING STORY. NICELY PUT TOGETHER. PLEASURE TO READ AND TO CONTEMPLATE IN RELATIONSHIP TO OUR CURRENT ISSUES IN GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC LIFE.

Fascinating and wish they were still alive as they were both true, intelligent, caring patriots.

Wonderful book. I highly recommend. Takes you back to a very different world.
